AWG 101 "non reflective" and AW 591 "blackout" mod

I have a AWG 101 which came to me quite cheap, but bruised and battered. The crystal was badly scratched and the bezel and bezel ring scuffed. So i bought a AW 591 which was cheap, too. I planned on transplanting the innards, making a nice AWG and a beat up watch for doing rough work (angle grinding, brickwork...). showed that teh A was quite worn, too. No need to say both modules worked fine. :)

So first step was replacing the scratched crystal on the AWG.

I had to sand the Bezel ring anyways as it was scratched. This destroyed the surface, so i decided to media blast and paint it.

In the end I did like the metal-look of the outcome and it´s non-reflectiveness so much that i decided to leave the bezel ring as is and do the whole hardware that way.

Tried to capture the surface on the pushers:

The other watch will get a black bezel ring and buckle.

This is more of a work log right now than actually a thread showing progress or a completed watch, sorry.

If you know where i can find a new Bezel for those watches, please let me know. I would like not to buy another complete watch, which will lead to more mods in the end leading to buying another watch....

I removed the lettering in the less destroyed bezel and put the AWG back together.

A few pics of reassembling the pushers first. Mis en place:

Pushers with spring, washer and 2 O rings each

One in, 3 to go.

Yes, i know the case is still dirty. will take care of that.

I do not have enough hands to take a pic of how to place the E-Clip near the pusher with a scalpel blade, position it at the collar of the Pusher with a needle and push it on with the blade of a small flat screwdriver. And i do not have a Macro Lens, so i had to shoot through my thread counter... Hope you can see where the clip needs to sit.

All pushers back in.

Comparison shot with the other case

Assembled:

Your feedback, ideas and comments are welcome! For example, I´m still not sure if i leave the rest of the black in the lettering, looks quite washed out but fits the rough surface. Or should i fill it black again? Now that the metal hardware is dull, i suddenly feel the screws on the bezel should be dull, too.

The AW-591 shall get a black bezel ring, black buckle and i thin about red lettering on the bezel, as the hour hand is red, too.

anybody got an idea if it is possible to glaze the LED to tint the light output? I´d like a deep red. and black pushers would be great, but paint won´t hold up i guess and PVD is abit out of my price range - Any DIY chemical processes available?!

Should look good with a fresh set of resin, don´t you think?

I'd leave the lettering as it is. It has a nice 'cast' look that suits the rough texture of the bezel. It's striking, and would look more ordinary with the letters painted.
Thanks tribe, this supports my initial thoughts.
That looks impressive, good work :-! I would leave it that way.

cheers
Looks fine just the way it is.|>

As i received some new Resin for the AWG and put the AW-591 back together, i thought i´d share a few quick shots of the reassembled watches.

The AW 591 has a blacked out bezel ring, black PVD coated buckle and stelthed bezel. The AWG has the bead blasted hardware already shown, just new, stealthed resin bezel and strap. The stock AW-591 is for comparison - tha blacked out one looks somewhat more massive and more compact at once in my opinion.

Buckle shot:

blasted - black - standard. I´ll add better (although still bad) pics.

I would paint the lettering either gray like the dial, yellow like the "tough solar" lettering, pink/red like the hour hand or white.
Photoshop would be helpful to get a good impression how it would look like.

To sum this thread up i did a few better (but still far from what you are used here...) pictures of the watches:

for reference: A stock AW-590, used and with a blacked out bezel, but otherwise as they come from Casio

The blacked out one:

After finishing i saw i just created myself a positive display version of the ML Minus the PVD coated buttons. But I´m quite pleased with the outcome.

This is the AWG, itr looks real nice in all new resin with the media blasted parts, the soft, smooth resin contrasting nicely with teh rough metal.

I´m looking forward to your feedback.

Just a short question.

How did you take out the bezel ring on the AW-591?

I can't seem to pop it off. Worse, the butter knife I used to try popping off the bezel ring slipped and scratched the bezel ring.
Thanks for bumping this, Kanzaki. I had no idea that lowtech had done this. The sand blasting looks sharp!

Regarding the bezel, I'll bet anything it's the same double-sided adhesive tape that is used on the G-2310 series. It's VERY tough. You just have to wriggle your blade edge along several places along the bezel to help reduce the grip enough to pry it off. That is... unless someone modified your watch and glued the bezel in place!
Thanks Xevious for bumping, I missed the question here.
You are right - The bezel on those watches is fixed with double sided tape and can be pried off. I held teh case with a folded rag so i would not slip into my palm.
I used a rather sharp blade to atart, as butter knives tend to be too thick. Once you have a starting point, a butter knife is betetr as it is stronger and less prone to impaling your hand should you slip.

Thanks. I'll try to do what you've said. I wanted to change the color of the bezel ring. Would spray painting it be a best way to make it black?

Here's mine...it's actually an AW-591MS...sans the military strap because I already replaced it with a strap from a G-306X.

If you will notice, the bezel seems to be in olive drab color. Are there any existing mods that will turn my bezel into black? Spray paints are not good for bezels right?

You can dye the bezel black useing "RIT dye" - Other brands have yielded different, mostly not so good results.
The bezel ring is steel. It can be spray painted, but degrease it beforehand and scuff teh surface so teh paint adheres correctly using sanding paper or something the like.

Putting the bezel ring back will require a superglue right? Or a double-sided tape is enough?

Unfortunately, RIT dyes are not available from where I am right now. I was thinking something stupid like using HAIR DYE instead. :-d

I will try popping off this bezel ring later. It has small scratches on it so I will really need to sand it down before even attempting to paint it.
I love it man. Beautiful job.
