That's right, there must be a minimun of energy so they can work. If the battery has not enough power and you press EL the screen will get darker or the hour dissapears.

You mean the old "light bulb" ones? At first I thought you mean EL.

Both use the same bulb I think...the difference is the old ones had the lil bulb in a side of the watch and the new ones have it in the center so it lights all of the screen...but maybe I'm wrong. If someone knows please tell me, thanks:think:

The EL backlight does not use a bulb, but rather a thin foil that lights up if current is running through it. EL panels provide much better light, but do consume more power, so do not use it extensively (only if your watch is solar powered :)). A very weak battery might not be able to make the EL light up, but a bulb would glow weakly.
