For the past few months we have seen the prices of used pieces plummet. I know several companies have put off price increases of new watches, yet to my knowledge none have actually dropped their prices.

New and used.

I am thinking in this economy, people are going to be buying watches in a lower price bracket(or not buy at all), hence manufacturers will lower their prices as an incentive to buy.

As a result, the lower prices intrude into the territory of lower-priced manufacturers, who have to lower their prices to maintain market share.

And so on and so forth.

The exchange rate is the key factor and dollar will lose its value even more in 2009.o|

as far as used prices, it goes up and down depends on timing of the deals.

It has already been reported here in the UK that sales of new luxury watches have been badly hit - one of those markets that is driven by nice bonuses that have now dried up. As in all areas logically sellers will discount to move stock and create cash.

Used watch prices will inevitably fall - basic supply and demand.

Summary of current economic situation - those who have money daren't spend it, and those who don't can't borrow it.

ive been doing a lot of looking recently and with the dollar to euro and the british sterling to euro values falling and i expect them to fall much further its going to be a good buying time for us in the euro zone example got a price on a omega and a hamilton last week at my local AD in ireland and then rang an AD in england and got a much better quote, but then again if any of ye have ever been to ireland you will know that prices in ireland are much higher than anywhere else in the world at least thats what we irish like to think , i forsee my collection expanding in size and quality in the near future as long as the us dollar and the gbp keep falling im a happy camper

Yes, certainly if you live in the US and UK.
No, not neccesarily if you live elsewhere. Of course, the economy of the World has been affected, but not as badly as in the two countries affected.

I'm thinking you ought to pay a little more attention to the economies of all the European countries...many are in a state of crisis...not to mention Japan.

Used prices have already tumbled. I don't see the major luxury mfgs. lowering their prices, however, ADs might be willing to cut better deals.
Many heretofore hard to find Rolex Daytonas are hitting the boards, many below MSRP, a far cry from last year when they were going for up to $12K (SS).

Agreed. I doubt we'll see any MSRP's drop. The "out the door" price is another story though..

I was thinking similar thoughts.. I noticed not too long ago that one of the Australian watch venders temporarily closed his internet webshop due to the strength of the Australian dollar.

Manufacturers will not drop their prices, but I agree that ADs feeling the squeeze might be willing to bargain more. The used prices on the forums have already taken a dive.

The opposite for us Aussies, I was told by several watch shops when buying my newest addition that there will be a price hike some time soon

I've noticed the MSRP pricing in Canada has increased several times in 2008 with most luxury brands. It would be nice to see a drop in the MSRP price but I really doubt that would happen. Most likely the pinch would come down to the AD's cutting deeper discounts to move inventory which I have seen a lot more of lately.

There's certainly a price below which they can't drop their prices. The option then is to cease production. It will be interesting to see who survives, and why.

And fascinating to find out which of the failures become grails. And why.
