Hello, friends of the BaliHa'i!

It is with great pleasure and excitement that we throw our coconut shell into the ring, and announce today the formal launch of the BaliHa'i Project. As some of you on these forums know, we've been working on this project for 6-7 months now, and the pieces are now in place - production samples arrived in early December, and look good - this watch is a serious chunk of steel! You can see a bunch of new photos on the BaliHa'i web site, at http://balihaiproject.com/thewatch/thewatch.htm . (The hour hand will change slightly in color to a lighter blue so it is more visible against the black dial, but that was about the only change we had to make after seeing the sample.) The illustration on the back of the watch case turned out great - to my knowledge, it's the first of its kind (I won't say any more - don't want to spoil the surprise if you haven't seen it already!).

Pricing and Preorders

We're also pleased to announce that we were able to stay true to our original target price of $800-900, even though we also added a PVD version and are including both a solid 316L stainless bracelet and a top-quality Italian NBR "vanilla-scent" natural rubber dive strap (there may be a few more goodies - we're still working on a couple of surprises!). The BaliHa'i in brushed stainless steel finish (numbers #1-70) will be $795 plus shipping, and in PVD-coated black finish (numbers #71-100) will be $895 plus shipping. Packaging isn't yet pictured on the web site, but the watches will be delivered in a nigh-indestructible Pelican 1120 dive case (like many other boutique dive watches costing $1000 or more).

Preorder is through the web site, which uses Google checkout and takes major credit cards, and requires a nonrefundable deposit of $250. The remaining balance will be due before we ship the watches out, and billed approximately 3-4 weeks prior to delivery (so, likely in early March 2009). Full terms and some more explanation are on the web site. As is the style, we will honor requests for particular numbers wherever possible, and as of the writing of this post, there are still plenty of prime (literally and figuratively) numbers available! The finished watches should arrive in late March or April 2009, and when they do, we will ship them out in the same order that preorders were received (so get your preorder in early, and taunt slower-moving folks by posting pics in all the forums!).

Whew! I think that covers most of it… please visit the web site and check out the pictures, and please send us an email through the site if you have any other questions that we haven't covered here (I'm sure I forgot something!).

Aloha and best wishes for a joyous holiday season,

Chris

Everything seems to be coming together on this project, glad to see you made it. Site looks great too.
Congrats Chris!!! The watch looks tremendous, can't wait to see it in PVD!!!
Those pictures are just a tease... that's not very nice! ;D Looks great though man!!!
Thanks, guys :) lots of pics on the site (none of the PVD, I'm afraid, because we added that idea a bit late, but should be identical to PVD on O7s, the couple odd Enzos he did that way).

Whats the meaning behind "BaliHa'i"?
Re: Don't Beleive the hype here's the real BaliHa'i

Remember Michner's book "Tales of the South Pacific"...took place on Santo Island in the S. Pacific......the word "balai-hai" in the Ambae language means "one of a pair"
Remember the film "South Pacific'....not that ridiculous remake from a few years back, but the real one w/ Mitzi and Rosanno...two islands, the one w/ the US navy base and the mystical one, Bali-hai, w/ the pretty girls! One of a pair.
Re: I'm watch sick ...

lol - noah, that's a symptom of our hobby, I think! There are probably many more folks who would see the watch and think of beer!

And Dr. Robert, great call on the name explanation... that WWII mystical Polynesian island full of pretty girls is exactly the feel I was going for, even though we took some liberties with the spacing. By most accounts, Michener's "Bali-Ha'i" was based on a real island, Ambae, in Vanuatu.

Curiously, when I looked back at Wikipedia to verify my spelling of the island, I see that they actually include in the entry: "Bali Hai is also a brand of lager beer sold in Indonesia".

You should modify the Wiki page to reference your watch and throw in a link. Couldn't hurt...:-!

Still working on the wife, by the way. I keep telling her $800 for Swiss movement is ridiculous. She agrees, but not in the way I would hope...
