Saxony watchmakers Glashütte Original (or GO for short) has introduced a new automatic caliber with 100 hours power reserve and a silicon balance spring in a 40mm steel and pink gold case.
The new caliber features a power reserve of up to 100 hours at a frequency of 4 Hertz (28,800 A/h). This high degree of autonomy is achieved with the use of only one spring barrel, developed specifically for this purpose: increased diameter and a smaller barrel arbour made it possible to lengthen the mainspring and sharply increase the number of winding turns. Caliber 36 is not equipped with a ratchet wheel or a detente click and relies on a system of three wheels positioned at three levels which engage directly with the barrel.
Caliber 36 is also fitted with an innovative silicon balance spring, a first for Glashütte Original and a first in Glashütte itself. The high-tech material renders the ultra-thin spring immune to changes in temperature and to magnetic fields.
A bi-directional winding mechanism ensures that the watch remains within the optimal charge range; guaranteeing excellent rate results. In addition, a regulator-free oscillation system makes it possible to adjust the rate using weighted screws directly on the balance rim. This new movement will be introduced across the range of Senator Excellence timepieces.
As for the aesthetics of the watch, hallmark Glashütte decorations and construction features include the three-quarter plate and the skeletonized rotor, the refined stripe finish, perlage, blued screws and finely wrought decorations on the wheels and rotor track. The new Senator Excellence also features an elegant manual winding chain, presented in full view as the watch is wound by hand.
