I've had a passing interest in building or modding watches for a few years, but have never done it. I have been watching a bunch of videos, how-tos, and reading a ton of articles about it, and the more I do, the less nervous I am to get started and ruin a bunch of parts. I accept that it an expense/risk in starting out a new adventure, but after looking for a few years unsuccessfully for a watch I want, I think I need to DIY.
that said, are there beginner's guides or an "idiot's starter kit" somewhere to get started? I am concerned I'll order most of the right parts from Ali or whatever, but then forget a gasket or screw or whatever that ruins my whole progress.
I already have a set of tools with basics like screwdrivers, that pry-bar that looks like an oyster knife, pin pushers, and a basic case-back opener. It looks like I'd need to get a crystal/bezel press but I'm seeing those are actually cheap at a local Harbor Freight. I'm willing to buy "real" tools if I end up enjoying this as a hobby.
thanks!
