While shopping at the local J C Penney department store on Black Friday, I experienced the typical madhouse environment expected when you entice people with sales prices that are time limited. I did however, score a Seiko Land Monster with SS bracelet for a very good price of $292. I was very happy until I was offered the buyer protection package for an added $49 of which I politely declined. As I declined this offer another Sales person chimed in and said that I would be sorry when I break the crystal. This got me to thinking. I have had many watches throughout my life and I have never experienced a broken crystal. I have scratched many a crystal but have never broken one. This brings me to the question: How many of you have expereinced a broken crystal and if so, what were the circumstances that caused the damage?

I have. Several years ago I completely shattered the crystal (non-saphire) on my watch when I was checking into a hotel. I hit my wrist & watch flush with a sharp corner on the hotel front desk. The front desk tried to make the best of a bad situation and asked if they could have the concierge take it to a watch repairman. Even with this one experience, I still don't know if I would purchase an additional protection package. It's the only experience I've had with a shattered crystal in 20+ years of owning various watches.

Congrats on the Seiko pick-up M&Q.
Very wise to save the 49$ as well.
Personally I've never scratched a crystal of any sort, much less broken one.
I happily live a very sedate lifestyle though...lol.

God Bless Ya Friend .... there was NO WAY I as going a-n-y-w-h-e-r-e near anyplace even vaguely resembling a retail establishment today. I've yet to see a sale price high (or low ...) enough to entice to one of those insane bastions of commercialism on this date ..... no way, no how ...........

To answer your question, in 20+ years, I've never experienced a broken crystal either. And I didn't baby the Seiko 6309 either; it was my do-anything, do-everything, be-all-to-end-all daily beater. That poor watch suffered many indignities, and has the wabi to show for it. But she's never had a broken crystal.

I'm with you; to paraphrase and with apologies, "We don't need no stinking warranty!"

Cheers!

Bill I watched (driving by) many a misbegotten soul actually lining up, and some pitching tents in front of, a Best Buy store a full 36 hrs+ pre opening for "doorbuster values" :-s
My time and warm bed are worth MUCH more than that!

I hate the way they"sale" you the protection plan.

"Oh you should get it cause the buttons on this TV goes out all the time"

Really... Maybe I should just not buy it then.

I buy extended protection warranties on

Laptops,DSLR Cameras, and LCD/Plasmas that's about it.

I've broken two crystals that I can recall. One on a Fossil, upon which I stepped. The second on a Seiko, in a direct hit as I got broadsided on my motorcycle 20 years ago. That's about it, neither time obviously a normal happening.

See, that, IMHO, is just insanity. What is the point?? Do some folks have 36+ hours they can spend on a sidewalk in front of a store? Apparently there are some that do; I am not one of them.

A few years ago, when I was driving night deliveries, I'd time my route so as to end up near a store at 5am, just so I could sit in my nice warm truck, sipping piping hot coffee, and watch the lemmings squeal and squirm when the clerks opened the door. It was funny to watch human herding instinct at work. Lines would be 50+ people deep, the doors would finally open, and the crush of humanity is a sight to behold ....

My first experience with this was when I was in Gitmo in 1984. Remember the Cabbage Patch Kids? Yeah, I'm in my early 40's ..... well, this same herding instinct appeared on base. I was working the Commissary (grocery) Store, so I had to be into work at 0530. The Exchange didn't open till 0700, but that didn't stop folks from being there at (or before!) 0530.

It was funny; I heard from a friend working in the Exchange that the CPK's were sold out in the space of a few minutes. I wonder how long those toys lasted in the house? :-d

Awright, awright, awright .... I'll shut up. It's just that this has made me laugh for a long time, and it still amazes me ........

Cheers!

Over the years, I have found that on Black Friday there is a window of opportunity that begins at about 10:30 AM and lasts about an hour or so when most people at the mall are becoming tired and get off their feet and get something to eat. I usually hit the stores at this time with a preconceived target to purchase. I had my eye on the Land Monster at J C penney for a while. The entire operation from beginning to completion took all of 15 minutes. The only part of the operation that I have not completely worked out is the parking situation. But I just figure that the long walk from the car to the store is good for my health. I do agree with all that the early birds that camp out at the mall to save about a $100 on a laptop borders on the insane. Maybe these people look at the whole thing as some sort of sporting competition. Who Knows? I have had my Land Monster for a day and I am loving every minute that it graces my wrist. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

 :-s I wonder who started that label, Black Friday? It doesn't sound like
something McMann and Tate or those guys on Mad Men would
come up with. It's like a stampede of sheep.

I hadn't broken a crystal on a watch since I was kid, until the other day. I was driving home from the gym and had worn a Timex Ironman at the gym. When I parked in my driveway, I noticed I had left my Rolex Date in the center console. Apparently On a previous visit to the gym, I took it off and placed it in there. Well, wanting to bring it inside ( I also had some packages from the store to bring in), I had no place to hold it so I put it on my wrist, along with the Timex. It seemed fine until a picked up my package and the Timex moved and slid over my Rolex and chipped the edge of the crystal!!!:-(

That's gotta mean something when a Timex attacks your Rolex!:-d

The only crystal I ever broke was on a Seiko quartz (don't remember the model) trying to learn to surf at Sunset Beach on the north shore (Oahu) when I first got out of the Navy in 1983. I had wiped out on a 6 footer and after swallowing half the Pacific, came up, made it to the beach and retrieved my board and as I bent to pick it up I saw the crystal was completely gone except for a couple of shards. I have no idea what I hit as I wasn't hurt at all, just the watch which was a total loss of course.

I have broken one. It was on a cheap digital timex back when I was in school in 1982 (one of those with the time on screen one, date on screen two and seconds on screen three). I hit the face flush on a steel pole. The crystal cracked into a nice spider web pattern.

As an aside, the watch still worked but my dad told me to throw it out. He bought me a new one :-!, which I think would be consider a predecessor to the Iron Man, although it was steel and not waterproof....but same features.

My JC Penney had two Casio G-Shocks, on clearance for 40% off list, then I saw the paper had 40% + 30% on clearance watches for the door buster sale. So I got up at 3:00am and when down there and picked up a GW810BXD-1 and a MTG960DA-2V for $84 and $63 respectively. (List price was $200 and $150). Both have the metal bands and atomic time keeping. These are the first digitals I have bought since I was a kid. Good deal though:-!.

I broke the crystal twice on the same watch. a sapphire crystal at that. Both times it was hit against the drier in the paint booth. As far as a extended warranty, I did get one on my new hd lcd tv. The total replacement and in home repair warranty. so for 5 years I have total peace of mind. considering the price of the TV, the warranty was less than the tax I paid.

I also bought an extended warranty on my new plasma tv.
Supposedly if it breaks during warranty, it will be replaced with whatever the newest comparable model is.

I have only broken one crystal and it was mineral. In my youth, in a bar, to many drinks, and the rest is history.

So how is the plasma doing john? I went with a 40 inch LCD, added the harmon kardon reciever and the huge floor standing surround, plus a ps3 and a bluray player for the computer. so far, nothing is hooked up except the TV:-d
