We are going to get my father in law a watch for his birthday coming up. Budget is $1000, ideally a new watch. Looking for something that's a versatile wearer in the vein of a Sinn 556i or Rolex Explorer. 40mm MAX, ideally 37-39mm range. Leather OR stainless steel band is ok. Auto preferred, quartz is ok as well.

I like The Archimede Outdoor suggestion. Similar aesthetics as the Sinn and the Explorer. $780 from watchmann.



There's a few nice JDM Seiko models on Seiyajapan as well, all under $500.

I think a ball fireman racer watch fits your description. It's 40mm, automatic and versatile. Can be worn casually and easily can be dressed up. The price I think is just around your budget.

If you don't want to spend the whole budget, could go for the Steinhart Ocean 1, very versatile also.
