Buran 24H Regulator Chronograph - 31682 movement

Hello,

I purchased this on ebay:

I'm familiar with, and had been hunting, this watch with the 31681 movement.. and thought that it had gone out of production. The version I'd seen with the 31681 movement had yellow hands (more info in this thread: https://www.watchuseek.com/f5/buran...h-%96-mission-impossible-aww-11-a-846833.html ).

Anyway, while the watch didn't ship to me with a box, it did ship with a Poljot manual/warranty with movement instructions, and a filled out page that had the purchase date as march of this year.

Anyone know if they're producing this watch again? And if there's a reason for the change in movement? (maybe they just had spares). The watch was fairly cheap for this model (at least from what I'd seen for sale used previously).. and the seller apparently has more of them.

And.. on the movement, apparently the difference between the 31681 and 31682 is that the 31682 was supposed to have a day/night disk? I'd guess that is a pretty minor thing that should be running on a 24 hour cycle anyway... but, anything I should be aware of with that?

Thanks,
Marshall

Buran is no longer a Russian owned company, it was sold by Volmax to the Swiss a while ago. So there will be no more Buran watches at all with Russian movements! Actually there are no more 3133 or it's variants (31681, 31682, etc) in production at all anymore, get them while they are still cheap!
As I know, Volmax transfered that brand to Switzerland. So they did not sell it exactly. Aviator is now Swiss like Buran. Sturmanskie is still Russian.
These pieces would most likely have been assembled recently in Moscow, and then acquired and sold by, the RUSCAMERA eBay store.

The case is a regular Poljot case from the early-2000s, and the dial design, created by a former(?) WUS forum member, was stolen by Volmax. I imagine the case design was copied by Poljot at some point just after the turn-of-the-century, because they appear in the 2002 catalogue as part of the "Russian Chronograph" series.

As you noted, the model number is incorrect because for all intents and purposes it's a cal. 31681 without the day/night disk. This recent thread illustrated where the disk would normally be attached to the 24hr wheel: https://www.watchuseek.com/f10/advice-31681-24-hour-subdial-hands-misaligned-879572-2.html

Yes, that's who I purchased from. So they (whoever they is) have started putting some of these together from old parts you think?

I had read some of that when initially hunting for the watch. It's pretty much every artists/designers fear of what will happen if they post something on the internet.

Thanks for the information,
Marshall

Really? I would love to know more about that! Is that the original design on the left?

Here's a thread that mentions it: https://www.watchuseek.com/f10/new-buran-regulator-chrono-today-126128.html
Unfortunately the link they refer to is dead.

Some more info here (in french): Chronomania - Un drame qui m'avait chapp...

Between google translate and what little french I remember from high school, it sounds like there was some sort of settlement between G.I. and Poljot .. which might be why the other info link is dead.

Yes, the good news is it was probably assembled at the 1MWF using parts bin dials and cases. It's a nice watch!

It's not from the original batch with the gold hands assembled way back when, but I don't ever recall ever seeing this one in an official catalogue anyway.
I have the same watch, is very accurate and smooth to operate.

The same seller and the 31682 marked on the movement.
