There's two ways they secure the clasp to the strap. Drilled through or hidden spring bars.
Buckles and clasp usually are a standard size. Say if a strap is 20mm at the lugs. The buckle will be 18mm. 22mm strap, 20mm buckle size.
If you forego the notch. It'll open up the amount of straps that can be used.
