Just wondering is a movement can be thicker than its watch's mid case. If so, how does it stay secure? I imagine that the mid case would need to be thicker than the movement, minus the rotor. Is that right?

It's possible if the case back is thick enough to accommodate the protruding part of the movement.

Similarly, parts could protrude through the dial aperture, see domed dials.

With a case like this you won't need to worry about movement's thickness.
