Hi gang,

Been wanting a citizen promaster tough (Ray Mears) titanium for a while now but no luck finding one. I see citizen makes a watch that looks very similiar although its not titanium. Does anyone have both watches, kinda curious as to what they look like side by side. Are there any real differences in the two besides titanium and is the titanium that much lighter and more durable? Thanks for your help!

Ah there are quite a few differences, if you are referrig to the BM6400. The BM6400 is larger than the Promaster Tough - diameter 40mm vs 38mm, lug width 21mm vs 20mm. The BM6400 has the blue Citizen lume you see a lot now, while the Promaster Tough has C3-like lume (not sure which is brighter). Moreover, the Promaster Tough has a monocoque case while the BM6400 has a typical screw down caseback. The BM6400 also has mineral crystal while the Promaster had sapphire. But of course, there is a difference in price as well. The Promaster Tough probably costs 4x as the BM6400 now (original retail price was probably that much as well).

As for the titanium, I am not sure if it's how much lighter it is but it is extremely durable. The duratect coating Citizen gives it makes it more resistance to scratches than stainless steel.

They still do make titanium models like the original 'Ray Mears' Promaster Tough:

The titanium versions (Ray Mears and successors) have been appearing on the bay periodically but you need to be willing to take a chance and pay $250-300. I have seen three this summer. You can't steal these, too many people know them. On the other hand, the BM6400 is easy to find for less than $100. I bought mine on the bay last month for $80 and it's as new. One sold today with bracelet for $50! To find these deals you need to expand your search vocabulary and know that some sellers don't know the watch and so just advertise them with something like "Citizen watch." Btw, the BM6400 on leather is very presentable dd and mine is +6 seconds/month. I just don't do yard or car work with it on - I have an old BN0000 for that.

Happy hunting,

Just to be clear, you guys aren't aware of any versions of the one in the first pic below (bn0110) that do not have its marines' badge on the dial? I kind of like its Ti, sapphire, extra WR etc. over the cheaper bn6400 version, but it's really the longer & bolder hands, lumed second hand, nicer font all around, date window, cleaner chapter ring etc. that make me want to find the nicer one. Just don't know that I can handle going commando.

How have you been liking it? Any nitpicks? General quality vs. your bn0000 for instance?

Thank you.
