Is there a substantative difference between a mineral glass crystal and a sapphire crystal in terms of durability, scratch resistance or other factors? Thanks in advance.

Three types of crystal are used in watches:

1. Acrylic plastic crystal

The least scratch-resistant...

2. Mineral crystal

A mineral crystal is a "mix-up" of several mineral elements that are manufactured and treated by heat procedures to create a hardness. This process is made to make it more scratch resistant

3. Sapphire crystal

Known as the most durable and scratch-resistant crystal.
It’s app. 4 times harder than a mineral crystal and 20 times harder than acrylic plastic.

Mike: That was a wonderful link -- I learned a lot, including about crystals. Thanks a lot!

There's also a pretty fair collection of still photos on the manufacturing process of synthetic sapphire crystals as part of a short video on the Breitling website. Click on "Made by Breitling" and then "Crystal", there is an audio commentary to explain what you are seeing.
