Hey Guys,

As you all know the Casio G-Shocks are probably one of the popular watches these days. Celebs like Kanye, T-Pain, Athletes, and other stars are wearing them. To be honest the one who really brought the G-Shocks to life is Pharrell when he iced out his G-Shock by Jacob the Jeweler. Yea, Pharrell is all about style and detail...

Today everyone is setting diamonds on the G-Shocks, but with no taste. The setting is horrible, the diamonds look like :-x:-x:-x:-x (excuse my language), and the case is made out of sterling silver, come on. Silver is a expensive material, but it's made to be used for antiques. After some time the silver turns black and ugly, and it doesnt have the flash gold has. The only material which looks as good as gold is stainless steel. And if you guys are familiar with setting, stainless steel is really hard to set. You need to use a CNC machine to set stones, and its expensive. So beware of who you buy from.

Here are a few nice Diamond G-Shocks.

Jacob & Co. But its custom made, they dont sell it a the store.
Look at the image below, look at the detail and the setting of the diamonds. This is craftmanship.

Theres a jewelry company I came accross on the net, Icebox. They have some nice Diamond G-Shocks. I think they made some pieces for T-Pain.
I don't know how much they run for, but I guess you can contact them.

I'm sure you guys heard of ZShocks. This is a company who set CZ's on Silver. There setting is OK, not the greatest. I really dont like these two materials put together it spells out cheap. But it looks OK. I heard it sells for $800. I think a CZ watch which sells for $800 is way overpriced. I personally would not buy such a watch.

I took a look on eBay and I saw some of the ugliest Diamond G-Shocks. I personally wouldn't buy any of the Diamond G-Shocks which are currently listed. eBay is a good place to get deals, but not everything is a deal. If there is something worth to look at, Ill update you guys.

I still think they're pretty hideous, good craftsmanship or not. Have any of these guys heard of "restraint?" Maybe a single ring of stones around the display? Or spell out "G-Shock" in diamonds and leave the rest alone? There's a lot of options between "none" and "completely encrusted" that seem to be ignored...

I really think this takes away the true essence of a G-Shock: being a Tough daily watch.
Once a G has been changed beyond what a typical mod would involve, it's no longer a G. Diamonds on a relatively inexpensive watch makes no sense to me at all. When Pharell did it, I found it amusing. I didn't think it would get this out of hand though...

Technically, what's the problem? Diamonds are more resilient and longer lasting than resin, so it should be good, right?

Except it doesn't make any common sense. Not for me, sorry.

Then again, I've long been a proponent of my observation that fashion is inversely proportional to practicality. Minis, high heels, you name it. The less useful it is, the more it becomes an advert for people's disposable, whimsical expenditure. So diamonds on a G simply displays high fashion - the ability to have more money than sense :)

Diamonds are only as resilient as the material they're mounted in. If you bash a diamond-encrusted resin G-shock into a doorknob, you're going to put some serious scratches in that stupid doorknob, but you're also probably going to loose a few of your diamonds :( No matter how good the glue is, gluing something rigid to something flexible usually doesn't work out.

As far a whether it's "right" or "wrong" for a G to be dolled up, I don't mind the concept of a G-shock as a casual watch that's never going to go white-water rafting, skateboarding, or DEA drug-busting, so the diamonds being there doesn't bother me. It's the diamonds being ALL OVER the thing that bothers me. As an accent, I wouldn't really mind them. You could probably set them very securely in the metal bezels on some models (Gulfman, Mudman, Frogman, etc) if you made them out of white gold or something.

I personally have no reluctance to it. To be honest, when I saw the silver bezel mounted on the frogs or 5600 listed in Yahoo Auction Japan, it looked good and outstanding. My only concern was its high price and how to maintain it. So I dropped it eventually.

My point is: if G-Shock is only for tough usage, then buy one piece for 10 years may be more than enough. But most of us keep on buying G's is mainly due to its design, colour or anything fit our dressing. In the absolute sense, it is pointless to buy a model in different colours or within minor changes (including me
). I don't mind seeing decoration on G's. Whether the workmanship is good or the appearance/style attracting you is the only key.

Tasteful or not, no G-Shock of mine shall suffer the indignity of having extraneous bling.

Want stones on a watch? Go buy a Technomarine; at least it's the factory that puts them in.

thewatchbroker, Thanks for posting this. My name is MO and my 2 brothers and I are the owners of ICEBOX. I understand many of the users on this forum don't really agree with this concept, but can you just tell me honestly...If money weren't involved, would you guys wear something like this? Don't worry about it being the 5600 model, I just mean your favorite gshock. I'm curious, 'cause I think most people's answer would be different?
