Obtained same day this week from different sources both 19J are 150,080 1925+ Ultra-thin D.Gruen and 485,761 1918 very-Verithin. The U.-T. may be as late as 1929. It was for sale until then. It was not much thinner than the Verithins and thicker than the 1924 originated Ultra-Verithin. The very-Verithin is a case name for the Verithins. This one here makes a thinner watch than the U-T with a Verithin movement. With similar cases the specially contracted 19j D. Gruen cost twice as much as the Gruen factory 19j adjusted Verithin. Not justified in my opinion then or even now.

Found in Gruen 1929 dealer catalog they were selling worldwide, not just in Canada and U.S. Had over 1000 dealers in Germany then. The cheaper grade Alpina watch (Gruen Guild) was for Germany. Thus a reason for the 4 differently named cheaper models without serial numbers and in 17 ligne Verithin size.

Art, it feels strange to say it is refreshing to see you posting a non-solid gold Gruen. The Very-Verithin Ultra Quality case was Gruen's highest quality gold filled case, equal to 30 years before they would wear through.

Appreciate comment. Gruen truly made nice cases. The g.f. case is deeply engraved on back indicating thick gold. Do not know what PER in case mark is. Unusual for D.Gruen to be in original Wadsworth 14k case. A reason to believe with high 150080 special series number it is a late one. These were usually in 18k Gruen cases. Typical of Gruen p.w. gold one cost 8 times the g.f., but was only a little more than scrap value. Gold fill case back photo:

Looks good to me. Probably similar movnt. and serial number. Not a great many made. You may have noticed the gold maybe unique special that is hand marked very Verithin, with hinged front and back, but not very slim.

Fred Gruen and his advertisers were inclined toward flowery verbosity but your intelligent humor may not be misplaced.

Art, mine has serial number 500502 (movement) and I believe it is a V4, 17j 5 position movement so a bit more common. I looked up the price I paid back then when I bought it, it was $23.25.
