Hey watch enthusiasts,
I am looking to buy either a Seiko SKX007 or SKX009 diver watch from creationwatches.com, however i wish to understand the reasoning behind the price discrepancies between what to me seem to be the same watch.
SKX009J1 VS SKX009K1
SKX007J1 VS SKX007K1.

In both instances the watch represented by the J at the end is marginally more expensive than its K counterpart. There is already reference to this issue on the forum and two theories prevail.

Some claim that the J indicates that the watch was made in Japan whereas the K indicates the watch was made in China/Indonesia/Malaysia or wherever. Others believe the J represents the market place it was intended for say the Asian and K could represent Europe/North America.
It would have been my belief that a genuine Seiko watch made in Japan Thailand or Timbuktu would be of identical quality. Official Seiko watches strictly adhere to a uniform manufacturing process therefore the quality should be identical regardless of where it was made. I would guess that only the high end luxury models would be made in Japan. Watches made outside of Japan are for access to a cheap labour force and tax incentives however I digress.

Creationwatches.com state that both watches with the J were made in Japan and above the 6 there is an additional print of 21 Jewels on the dial. Can anyone shed further light on this and does the J detonate a higher quality to justify its higher value? All thoughts on this issue are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Difference in price and quality between Seiko Diver SKX007JI vs SKX007KI and ...

J vs K hits the forum yet again!

Other than the tiny dial differences-same great watches made with the same quality parts by the same robots...just in different countries/destined for different countries....in my mind it really doesn't matter!!

If I was keeping it stock and I could get a J with 'made in Japan' on the dial for a few quid more, then I'd probably pick that.

If the price difference was significant, or if I was modding it on arrival anyway (which I usually do!), then the cheapest (probably the K) would do absolutely fine. :)

Hey man thanks for the info it was helpful and I much prefer the brighter dial on the SKX009J as opposed to the K model and it's impossible to tell this from the website photo's this difference It would seem from other comments this is to be an age old debate!! I remember a similar discussion concerning a mobile Phone IMEI number that could allegedly determined where the phone was assembled and it's quality. Some believed this to be true others believed it was nonsense. Honestly I find it hard to believe that any of those watches would be produced in Japan as it doesn't seem financially viable. At the moment I'm leaning towards the SKX009J which I believe had a starring role in All is Lost movie, then all I need is the boat!!!!
Thanks for all the replies

What a douche^^^. Really clever.

Maybe the OP wanted a new take on an existing topic. Maybe he doesn't care to waste his time searching when there are respectful and nice people on this forum willing to help.

Never understand the watch nerds who like to waste their own time chastising others, if by some chance a topic's been raised on WUS in the last ten years.

Is there really a problem with asking a question (or close variant) that has been asked before? Does it physically harm you or cost you money?

Gotta love snobbery about a $200 watch from some dork that lives in his mother's basement.

Next time just pass by the topic and leave it to someone who wants to help.

Hey man I unequivocally apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused you please accept my humblest apologies. I have to admit to preferring the advice of purchasing the K and use the saving on a NATO strap. However in you infinite wisdom sir you seem to have ignored the question asked. I wonder does that book have a chapter on"How to answer a question on a forum/thread" Maybe I will consider donating the savings to buying you a book on "How to mend a personality defect". That should get me some good Karma. Thank you for you reply

Hey man, I was only picking on you a little bit. Purely tongue in cheek.

To answer your question, I have owned both and the "J" is not worth the extra $. I detected no difference in quality with the K. In fact, the 2 SKX's I own now are K's.

Again, I was only joking around with you. Good luck making your decision! Either way, you will end up with a terrific watch.

Hey man though you were starting on me so fired back but all good now. My though now is that if decide on the SKX007 I will go with the K due to the the very attractive price for what is a quality watch by all accounts. However if I chose the SKX009 I'm leaning towards the J due to the difference between the hue on the dials as was pointed out by Seiko madness.

I'm definitely getting one it's just choosing one now. Thanks for the reply.

Times_end,

Let me make few remarks:

(1) I do prefer the hue in my 9J version. I first purchased a 9J. I did not like like the "21 jewels" text. When I bought my first 9K, I had planned to keep the 9K as my pepsi watch and mod the 9J. However, after comparing the two, I decided to keep the 9J as it was born and mod the 9K. That is, I preferred the 9J color sufficiently enough to overcome the fact that I would like not to have the "21 jewels" text.

(2) I identified the color difference in my watches and in the pictures. However, as Subafan pointed out, "watch that has almost 20 years in production so, more than likely must have been produced millions of them with maybe multiple variations in shades of each colour." Hence, we cannot be sure that the difference I found is still there in the current batches of 9Js and 9Ks. Also, I would not assume that sellers as Creation Watches and Chronograph.com update their pictures. So, even if you find a difference in their pictures, you cannot be sure that the watches will have different colors.

Hence, if you indeed buy the 9J, then there is a chance that you will pay slightly more and will not get the lighter blue you are after.

Finally, there is a minor point that sometimes is not mentioned: my SKX009J has the word "JAPAN" engraved in the case back; none of the others SKXs I own (all Ks) have that.

What i Heard from a person that spoke with Seiko was just this. J and K-model are for different markets, but made in the same factory. Some countrys demand country of origin on the Product, hense the "Made in Japan" on the J-models. J-models mostly have English and arabic day Wheels, while K-models mostly have English, spanish and french if i remember correctly. They also said that the K-models often come with longer bracelets and straps because we tend to have bigger wrists in Europé and North America.

Arrrgh, still trying to decide on what to choose. I stated in a reply in this post that I very well could be getting both a new 009 and a used one for my project. I still haven't decided as of yet if the K1 will be the new one or if the J1 will be the new one. I will keep all posted. Aren't watches a gas, I really think they are the best thing that has ever happened to time.

Hey now, please be civil. I'm at the point now where I'm really gathering insight on what my plans are and how I'm going to go about this project that I want to conduct. You know something, just because I want to carry out a project and mod a watch doesn't mean it is going to happen. I need to acquire a skill set level, that's either the pre-owned 009 or new 009 will enter. I will be conducting my apprenticeship on the SKX009 As I said before the pre-owned are up there in price like the new one's and it is pretty tempting to just get 1 new one. I don't believe in feeding frenzy's but I have a feeling that these SKX's are going to be a sought after item even though there are many out there. I will keep all posted and until then remember "Peace, Love and Watches". Over and out Stromboli.
