Do you guys prefer Eco-Drive or Automatic as a daily-wearer?

Hey guys,

Maybe it's because my SKX is fairly new and i don't want to mess it up or just that i can trust my Eco-Drive being more accurate. Not really sure, but I've realized that i always grab my Citizen Eco-Drive before heading out as opposed to my SKX. I tend to save my SKX as a weekend watch as opposed to a daily wearer/beater.

Just wanted to know if you guys share a similar experience as mine and if you have a preference.

Daily wear? That suits an automatic movement very well. That said, my own response would be a vote for Eco-drive. It's always within a few seconds of exact time (my Nighthawk gains about three seconds a month), has a power reserve measured in months, and should be good on the original battery for a decade or more.

I have several automatics in my collection, and frankly I'm getting tired of their finicky ways. I don't prefer to judge other watch aficionados and their love for the automatic movement, but for me quartz, solar, or even kinetic movements are just easier to live with on a daily basis. It have supreme respect for the technology and heritage of mechanicals and automatics, but I am beginning to realize they are not for me.

I love my automatics as daily wearers... I like the tick tick tick, I like the wheels and gears (on those with view windows on back) , I like the secret knowledge that I'm rocking an 18th century technology. Inconvenience is a small price to pay for joy. (Then again my daily driver is a Miata!).

Your a tuff person DD a Miata, mine is a weekend or vacation toy and while a boatload of fun, I'm glad to get back to my Jetta. I rotate between my two Seiko Autos (orange monster and land shark) and my titanium Sky Hawk. I usually wear one of the two Seiko's for a week or two then change out. While I like the light weight and accuracy of the Sky Hawk I find my large heavy stainless Seiko's reassuring despite their quirks. When I realized I was into watches I dumped all my battery powered quartzes, I couldn't stand the thought of them running away in a drawer when not worn. I just wish my ears could still hear my autos tick, but the ears are long gone.

It's basically quartz vs automatic dilema.

If I wear the watch every day I would go with the automatic.

Solar Quartz movements for me. I have one automatic which I wore daily for almost 2 years. Got really annoyed by having to wind it when not worn and having to adjust the time every few days to remain within 30 seconds of accuracy. My Solars are always no more than a few seconds off each month and they never need winding. Unfortunately there are more watch options with automatic movements that I like better design wise. I probably will buy an automatic again and then be annoyed by its inaccuracy.

Then it's time for either a higher quality automatic or regulation of what you have now.

So yes, I don't have much time or love for automatics that go off by 10 seconds every day. They do need to stay on track for one to be a daily wearer.

Of course I don't actually need any watch, the whole reason of wearing one if because I enjoy old fashioned / defunct technology. But that said, they do need to provide me with the best accuracy that mechanical technology can bring, and my daily wearers do that easily.

Also I'd buy an Eco Drive if only I could find one that has character, focus and honesty in every aspect of its design and engineering. It's not a quartz thing per se because G-Shocks and 9F Grand Seikos manage that just fine.

I've worn Swiss autos add daily wearers for the last 8 years and recently got my first kinetic. Very happy with it. Always spot on accurate and I never need to reset and wind the darn thing if I take it off for a couple of days.

I always prefer mechanical watches to quartz due to aesthetics and mechanical intrigue, but I can appreciate the practicality of quartz and can appreciate why others might make the opposite choice.

Before I got in to this watch hobby, I didn't really care about automatics vs. quartz. After getting in to the hobby, I preferred automatics by a long shot. Now after having had both for a while, I'm back to being fairly neutral after having more experience with the pros and cons of each.

When it comes to daily wear, it's more about what I feel like wearing for the day based on the style of the watch. I've finally realized that I generally prefer dive watches though, haha. As for accuracy, I've never been too worried about it as long as my watches are within a minute or so of the time on my phone, so maybe that's why I don't have a strong opinion on whether I prefer quartz or automatic for daily wear. With that, my quartz watches are all Citizen Eco-Drives. Otherwise, I have an automatic Orient Ray and have a Seiko SKX009 and an SRP581 on the way, both automatics.

I love Eco drive but my daily wearer is an automatic.

My rotations change but my daily wearer has always been automatic since I got into watches.

I usually have a daily rotation of 2 - one for work and one after/weekends. So my autos in the rotation (one or both) are always charged up and telling the time.

My eco drives on the other hand are always ready.

My current rotation

For me , it's an automatic. "Daily wear" being the key phrase. I love being able to pick up my quartz watch after its been setting for a few months and all I have to set is the date, but I'm pretty active so my auto never runs down and I like the emotional feel of a mechanical watch whether it be manual or auto. Plus..................................................................( had to slip on my foil hat ), if an EMP goes off, you're still good to go.

I own both and i tend to keep my eco-drive relegated to wear that might inflict damage.... (the days when work takes me to the construction site, a weekend at the lake or the beach, a day horsing around with the kids, etc). Its not for any reason in particular, but i tend to baby my autos (while i know my mako can handle some bumps). While it may be totally a mental block, i subconsciously think the autos are more fragile and need the extra tlc.

But the bottom line is that I appreciate the concept behind the mechanics of the automatic and i love a good sweeping second hand. I find it relaxing to watch the sweep vs the thump thump of the quartz. In general I tend wear the autos more regularly.

I have one Eco-Drive that was a gift, and while I don't love the watch I love the fact that it's a perfect non-daily wearer. A dress watch with no seconds hand that I can grab out of the shelf every few weeks to get the dust off so to say

Either, it really doesn't bother me. I tend to wear my watches for a month at a time anyway so automatic, regular quartz, Solar, it doesn't really matter. However if I was changing watches everyday then I could see the attraction of quartz as an everyday wearer rather than having to set the time and day/date on an auto but over a longer run it doesn't matter too much.
