Now that I moved my Shogun I am looking at a new addition to my humble dive watch collection..

I'd like to try something new, but keep to my 'old' standards of a simple, well proportioned (39-42mm), reliable dive watch. I have been mulling over a Squale matte 1521 for quite some time now, the only 'issue' is that this watch is not available on a nice bracelet (I don't like mesh).

This brings us to Doxa. I like the cushion shaped cases & vintage appeal but for some strange reason I have never ever handled, much less owned one. I mean, is this the same company that used to make the 'old' Doxas or are they just using the name? Where are they made? Also, if I buy online do they ship from EU?

I have heard a few complains re QC. Is this a case for concern? Are these watches well put together and hoe is fit and finish?

Ultimately I must decide between this and a Squale...any one here owns both?

Would like to learn more about the brand. Thanks!

I have been a Doxa owner and fan for several years. I have both a 1200T Professional and a 1200T Sharkhunter. I find the QC to be excellent. Orange dials may not be for everyone, but to me the quintessential dive watch is Doxa orange. I also like the Cousteau legacy of the watches.

I got my orange dial Professional first and then added the Sharkhunter for a different look to the same watch. I'm happy with both.

I've owned a 1200T Pro for many years now, and it's a definite keeper. It's extremely comfortable, beautifully proportioned, very nicely balanced on the BOR, and that splash of orange is unbeatable! It's the ideal shade.

I'm far from expert on the history of the current company, but if you browse through the Doxa forum, where you've already posted a similar question, you'll find many who are. As I recall, the current owners bought into the brand, which changed hands several times since the Cousteau days. There has been sufficient continuity, IMO, to count modern Doxas in the direct line from that time. Enjoy your research, and form your own opinion. Or, shop the used market for a vintage piece!

both brands have great dive-watch history, you will just have to decide which watch speaks to you more, or buy one of each? :-!

do a little more research and the decision will become easier... tough choice!

I've never been a big fan of the classic Doxa design, but do own a vintage Sub 600T Searambler that I enjoy a lot... and I've owned several Squales, all great watches!

Sorry but if anyone doesn't like this get your coat and leave the dive forum now

Doxa is not for everybody. It looks different, wears different and feels different from any other dive watch I've owned. Super comfortable, incredibly accurate and unlike most other dive watches out there.
I've owned a Squale and several Doxa watches. Currently I only have a Doxa 1500T Searambler. I bought a 1200T not too long ago and although I am used to wearing watches in the 42mm range, that 1200T looked and felt like a 39mm to me. Way too out of proportion for the case style. I was able to trade it for a 1500T and it fits my 7 1/4" wrist like any 42-43mm watch. The only bad thing I can say about the Squale is that the lume was pretty bad. Especially when compared to any Doxa. Both good watches that have a good reputation.

If provenance is something that matters to you, they both have more of a relevant tie to their pasts than many brands.

Squale is now ran by what used to be their Italian distributor, and supposedly family friend of Charles Von Buren
The Doxa brand is owned by the Jenny family (of Jenny Caribbean fame).

...and ME. What more could you ask for?

Granted, DOXA is an acquired taste. Sub design went in one direction.. DOXA went in another. You either appreciate the cushion case, the plateau de-comp dive table bezel, or you don't. No right or wrong, strictly a personal choice. Some hate em.. but the WIS that loves em, really loves em!

Don't believe DOXA has any more QC issues than any other small watch builder, and I've had excellent customer service when any service was required.

I have the Sub 1000 Sharkhunter COSC and love it. Reminds me of my SCUBA instructor from the early 80's who wore a 300. Great watch, so very different from what's out there today. One of the biggest knocks on this forum is the fact that the company pays for and runs the Doxa forum so they heavily censor any and all disparaging comments regarding their products. That leaves a bad taste in many people's mouths for the company, and consequently their products.
