Doxa dive watches...whats your take?

Now that I moved my Shogun I am looking at a new addition to my humble dive watch collection..

I'd like to try something new, but keep to my 'old' standards of a simple, well proportioned (39-42mm), reliable dive watch. I have been mulling over a Squale matte 1521 for quite some time now, the only 'issue' is that this watch is not available on a nice bracelet (I don't like mesh).

This brings us to Doxa. I like the cushion shaped cases & vintage appeal but for some strange reason I have never ever handled, much less owned one. I mean, is this the same company that used to make the 'old' Doxas or are they just using the name? Where are they made? Also, if I buy online do they ship from EU?

I have heard a few complains re QC. Is this a case for concern? Are these watches well put together and hoe is fit and finish?

Ultimately I must decide between this and a Squale...any one here owns both?

Would like to learn more about the brand. Thanks!

I had a Squale 30 Atmos Horizon and NOS Tiger, and I currently own a Doxa SUB 1200T and Jenny Caribbean 300. I have to say that the quality of the Squale 30 Atmos was pretty high. It ran +3 seconds out of the box and the case and bracelet had nice machining, and the glossy black dial was a treat. My only gripe the 30 Atmos was the bezel. The bezel edge looked too blingy and cheap; it did not provide adequate grip.

The DOXA SUB and its sister Jenny Caribbean are well made, no-nonsense, tool watches. Both run between +5-8 seconds per day, and their bezels are great. The Jenny bezel is encased in sapphire while the teeth on the Doxa's bezel are exceptional. The Doxa has the best grip I've ever felt and both bezels feel crisp and precise when turning. In terms of comfort, the new bracelet on the Doxa beats the Jenny, which uses the older style BOR bracelet, and both Squale's. However, the clasp on the Squale 30 Atmos is by far superior to the Doxa and Jenny. Also, the new Doxa bracelet might be too blingy for some. I've read about some QC issues regarding the DOXA, mainly about the application of lume and paint on the hands, but both the Jenny and Doxa came just fine. The black paint used on the Doxa's hands are downright glossy, and the lume on both watches is evenly applied. The SUB is far and away the most comfortable to wear if you have smaller wrists like me (7 inches). The short lug-to-lug makes a big difference. I'm not 100% sure but I think the 50 Atmos is a bit taller than the SUB.

If history factors into your equation, then you can't go wrong with either one. I don't know what your intended use is, but both manufacturers provide watches that can take a beating. As usual, it comes down to your own personal preference.

How could anyone who has ever read a Clive Cussler novel not lust after a Doxa diver? A Doxa is going to be my first over a grand watch purchase soon.

I don't get them. And I just bought a 50th SUB300. I've learned since not to drink when I'm looking at watches. And pay attention to the small print "no refund".

I will buy it at a much reduced rate lol

doxa are cool watches but so are squale and cheaper

I have doxa and aquadive and squale all fantastic watches
I think aquadive is the best quality doxa and squale the same
but I like doxa the best followed by aquadive then squale
Very opportunistic Mr. Monkeynuts... I like them but cannot bring myself to get one.

The opening image in this post about the DOXA 50th anniversary watch is so stunning it hypnotized me. I have never owned a DOXA but I would love to own this one.

I'd pay $1499 tops. $1999 no way. $2499 definately not.

A few years ago I decided my collection needed a bit of color and also a dive watch with a solid heritage. A Doxa Professional ( the orange dial one ) was the logical choice. Fortunately at one of our ATL GTGs I got to try both a 750T and a 1200T. The 1200T was just right for my 7.5" wrist.

A little less than a year later I decided to add a Doxa Sharkhunter to the collection. Now that I have enjoyed them for a few years I can say that the decision to get both was a good one. There is just something about a Doxa diver watch.

To me...they have been a good thing to wear at work and play, ...they are a comfortable piece...re cost and value..we all put a ceiling on what we are prepared to pay, I'm glad I purchased when we were at parity with the USD...and respect all views re cost of ownership on any brand....all the best Dave

I love them. My 2 worst watch moves ever involved letting DOXAs get away; trading a 1200 Pro for a Plant Ocean, and selling my 750 Rambler.

I agree about the pricing; I can't justify retail, but there are very good deals to be had on lightly used flips.

I've owned 3 1200's, a NUMA, Sharkhunter MkII, and Searambler. All nice watches, but I would agree, overpriced. Fortunately, DOXA often has sales or discounted pricing for holidays like Black Friday. If you're in the market for a new one, that's the only time I'd say buy new. For me, they wear a little large on my 7" wrist and I think I've finally learned my lesson, and moved on from the brand.

I had a 5000t Caribbean that I thought was very well-made. It was one of the Doxas with the misspelling "PATENDED" on the case back. This was right around the time that the picture of the cases purporting to show them being made by a Chinese factory came out. At the time both of these things bothered me enough to let it go. The long and short of it though is if it can be had at a discount, Doxas are actually quite robust watches with great bracelets.
