Every now and then I think of buying a classic dressier watch. Also since don't have a hand wind watch yet considered that this formal watch that I will only use every now and then would be a good choice for this type of movement. After some searching stumbled upon this beauty, this astonishing Orient Star:

Problem is: too small (38.5mm), 18mm strap width and no display caseback.

Can anyone suggest an affordable alternative, also hand wind but closer to 40mm, with 20mm strap and display caseback?

I can suggest an affordable alternative, the Orient fdf0f004w. More affordable, 40mm, display back, (not sure if there is hand winding though) BUT sadly out of stock on skywatches and creationwatches ( havent checked amazon)

Orient Vintage Automatic Power Reserve FD0F004W Men's Watch

On another note, I would wear the Orient Star in a heartbeat, 38.5mm is an acceptable size for a dress watch, and it is like to wear large since it has a very small bezel.

Island Watch has it: Orient FFD0F004W Watch Features a 21-jewel Orient automatic movement, a 40-hour power reserve meter, a sapphire crystal, cream color dial, and a date window at 3:00

That watch is so good looking IMO that it's worth putting up with it being a bit small and not having a display back.
Thnak you folks you are indeed right: this watch is totally worth it at this size and features. Actually just now checked on the price and it is a bit too expensive for me... Are there any more affordable alternatives?... hand wind, applied numerals and overall look. And that minimalist power reserve indicator?...wow just awesome.

Come to think of it the watch is worth its price, let's show some love for it and maybe Orient will make more of these hand wind beauties...

Something I spent a LONG time learning: if you're looking for new manuals, choice is really there. Date-free manuals with a central second are even more rare.

You can try looking at Beijing watches: there's one good-looking in that this reminds me of, and 40mm and only $200 iirc....but its an auto and doesn't have PR, and has small second. So not really like this at all....

ps interesting note about designers: having omitted a date window and a small seconds, they've felt the need to give the eye a "12" and a "6" to look at. I would happily go without, especially with a dial texture that pretty
