Looking for a watch recommendation for my friend. This would be his first "nice" watch. He usually wears a suit to work, so he wants something that's sort of dressy/conservative, but still on a metal bracelet (he hates leather bands). His budget is $5000 or under, but if something fits his criteria that comes in way under that budget, he'll still consider it.

He doesn't want to swap bracelets either, so should come with metal bracelet from factory. Prefers white/silver dial, no chronographs. Something on the lighter/thinner comfortable wearing side. And ideally enough water resistance to swim with it once in a while (although this is not a must).

Also strongly prefers brand new.

I immediately recommended an Omega Aqua Terra, but what are some other good suggestions?

I'll second the Rolex Air-King / Oyster Perpetual suggestion. Certainly dressy. Also a little sporty.

Here's my own on a 6.75" wrist. It wears larger on a bracelet than it's diminutive 34mm size would suggest.

A $5K budget gives him a ton of options. My own personal dressy bracelet watch under $5k with arguably one of the best designed bracelets ever is the Tag Heuer Link. Named the Link for the design of the bracelet itself being very smooth polished metal and tight tolerances that do not grab any wrist hair. Mine is the less busy Calibre 6 movement with a small seconds dial only. Good luck, at that budget he is sure to get something very nice.

If your friend isn't a WIS the GS may be a difficult sale...

IMO the Aquaterra is an obvious choice with lots of color/size options.

I'm thinking tag or grand Seiko here, which is funny as they're in the opposite sides of the wis scale...

Or certina if he wishes to save some cash.

Damn, it took until the second replay for the GS to show up?! :-d

He could just buy a dress watch with a leather strap and put it on a bracelet. Then he can get a real dress watch instead. I'm sure if you go to a store and tell them that you're also buying a bracelet they'll be fine swapping it out to show you what it looks and feels like. As long as you give them the impression that you actually may be buying.

I don't really know anything about dress watches on bracelets (not my thing) but I think Longines, Sinn, and Baume & Mercier had some nice ones.

Zenith Captain Elite. Thin case and 40mm (fits under a cuffed sleeve perfectly), no lume, in-house movement, three hands and a date feature on a no-frills bracelet. Can be purchased new for right at your friend's 5K mark. (The GS and AT are great pieces too, if a tad bulky.) I just wouldn't swim with it.

A preowned SS Datejust on jubilee is a classic watch as well. There are a ton of dials like white stick or white Roman numerals which your friend may like. They go for around 3.5k to 4k and he can save some money too!

Tough to beat the Link bracelet for comfort.

Well assuming you want a date on the watch and the goal is dressy (smaller in size) and since GS has been mentioned. I'd look at something like this.

But for me any GS just because of the movement though they are awfully big watches.
