In the world of haute horology, there are a handful of watches that are truly more than the sum of their parts. In and of themselves, they're icons of design and while their importance can't be overstated, they sometimes are not as well known as they ought to be. First produced in 1996, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas was designed by a contract designer, Dino Modolo, and the man now in charge of VC's design team, Vincent Kaufmann. Their take on the steel sports watch was an instant success and laid the foundation for the Overseas line that has been in consistent production now for over 25 years. The sample available today is reference number 42042/423A-8723 and features a 37mm stainless steel case with integrated bracelet. With the caliber 1311 movement, it represents the first revision of the first generation Overseas watch.The dark dial is straightforward and pairs perfectly with the angular geometry of the watches other surfaces. Notice the way the signature Maltese cross is represented in the bezel design and on the caseback. The motif extends even to the crown which, at 3 o'clock, reliably adjusts the polished hands as well as the quick-set date.
This piece is in excellent pre-owned condition with no major scratches nor blemishes on the case or crystal. Recently fully serviced top to bottom by Vacheron Constantin.
