Getting kind of sick of collecting watches

Hi guys, I started buying watches in 2017 and have picked up probably around 12 and there is always something that catches my eye. However, earlier on I made the mistake of 'settling' for a cheaper version on a watch that I liked rather than getting what I really wanted and buying without trying watches on. Hence out of my 12, there are maybe 3 that I actually enjoy wearing. These are Omega AT 38 mm, Speed master and Tudor prince DD. The rest of my collection is all entry level stuff like Tissot, Frederique Constant, hamilton, etc.

I would like to get rid of these and just keep the 3 I like but can't figure out how. If I sell them on eBay, I sell them for very little money. I'm also worried that there maybe no demand. I haven't been very active on this forum so haven't hit my 100 posts. Also not sure how many people here are into entry level swiss watches.

Have you guys been in a similar boat? What have you done? Did you keep your watches and later on reconnected with them?

I would still buy more watches, but I would be very careful about my purchases in the future and would not look for cheaper alternatives!

Also, did anyone go from a whole watch collection to just one, really nice watch?

Walking the same shoes. I would like to shrink my collection but I really don't know how, since I like most of the watches I own. And sticking with only one watch would not be possible for me. I cannot even imagine it.
The idea behind going to one watch for me is to buy it, wear it on every occasion and then trade it to get another one. The time to keep it would be until I want one that I am willing to give up my current watch for. This is what intrigues me.

Well, I don't mind letting them go for what they are worth. I know I'll be selling for probably 50% of the price. I'm wondering if there is a better way to get rid of them. Keep them for me son? I don't know if he'll be into them. Give them to friends and family members as gifts? Not sure if they'll appreciate a used watch.

Any thoughts here?

I try to find roles for watches that I bought. e.g. Citizen Calibre 8700 I scratched up thoroughly, I like wearing for naps, don't care if it gets more scratched; it's a nice looking, light, thin, comfortable watch for relatively low price, and I enjoy having it on once in awhile.

Some watches that I was given, not to my exact liking, I won't sell cause of sentimental value, they basically sit and collect dust.

I think it depends how you see watches. You don't have one pair of shoes, or one suit, though. Why should your watches be any different. Women don't have one handbag, or one ring. its nice to have alternatives. And the named you mentioned, Hamilton, Tissot, Frederique Constant might be disregarded by Archie Luxury, but are more than acceptable to many of us.

I've bought watches to fill a role, so to speak. This was thinking with my mind and thought more in quantity would be better.

What I do now is that I purchase what I like and doesn't matter if it's similar or very different that what I have. This is thinking with my heart. If rather have a few but very special watches.

I don't subscribe to Archie's opinions of watches being 'shi**ers'. There's value in everything but the reason why you buy something makes a difference. I would easily buy a watch for $500.00 if it hit the spot.

Thing about eBay is you have to consider that they will take 10% of the price as a fee and PayPal will take another 3%. So even if you look at completed listings for an idea you have to subtract what the fees will be.

Ebay regularly runs promotions where they only take a nominal fee here in the UK, and I I,agile they do the same in the US? There is one on at the moment and I have two watches for sale - if they sell in the first month I am only charged ÂŁ1 total. Now that payment goes through eBay as well, there are no PayPal fees if you've signed up for that.

Yep I think we all eventually got to that stage. I’ve started selling off all the stuff I don’t wear anymore and buying fewer more expensive pieces. I like and appreciate a bunch of watches, but there’s a fundamental difference between liking them and liking them enough to actually buy and wear them.

There’s a market for all types of watches on the sales forum, so if you spend some time around here and get your post count up (the right way, not the way scammers are doing it now), I’m sure there will be someone interested in your watches. Just got out and participate in some conversations, stick around and have some fun!

Giving them as gifts isn't a bad idea. If you were talking with a friend, family member or co-worker you could casually say, "I've got a bunch of watches I don't wear anymore. They're in great shape, good watches (Swiss made) - do you want one? For free! Come by and you can pick one out." I think a lot of people would jump at that offer.

I go back on forth on this also. I have quite a few gshocks, Seikos, and a Hamilton I don’t wear/use. I could sell them on eBay. Not to make a big profit or anything, mostly to move them to people that want them. I think I could make the “reserve price” the price of shipping. I could probably do that in WUS sales too I guess.

Or maybe take a few to Goodwill.

I think you are better off selling them on the fora, instead of ebay. It is still a lot of effort to sell them and if you paid msrp for them and they have been well cared for most will sell for 50% of msrp give or take. Since you have only been collecting for a short time and have only 12 watches and you stated that except those you mentioned, they are all inexpensive entry level watches that you wish to sell, my suggestion would be not to bother and just keep them and you will very likely enjoy them all over again someday. Buying only "keepers" and refining your tastes and collection that way is far more satisfying to me than flipping.

Cut the losses and sell them if you don’t want them. The hit isn’t going to be too painful considering they’re on the cheaper side of town.

Lots of good suggestions here. I totally feel the need to be more involved in the forum now. I think a lot of my buying mistakes were the result of 'silent' research and not getting advice.

I would get them all cleaned up and maybe an inexpensive band here and there if needed. Put them on display and offer them to friends or family, allowing them to pick one out.

Seems like this would be a fun way to remove them from your collection. And if you do it right you can get a lot of milage down the road. Random acts of kindness and generosity never go unnoticed.

I get it. I'm in the process of shrinking my collection (for the time being) while "upgrading". I'm now targeting nicer pieces and selling off my impulse purchases.

I sell on ebay. I list them at a price higher than I expect to recieve but fair, and accept lower offers. You just need to be patient.

I own upwards of 50 watches. Some will never be worn again and should be sold, even if it’s just 20-30% that I get back. But...

I hate the selling process. I think of it as a fairly big waste of time (unless you’re interested in it as a task). If you work, how much do you earn in the same amount of time that you would spend selling off your nine watches? Time is money and we tend to throw it away when we do things we don’t like or aren’t critical.

So, I give away watches. I might hire a friend’s kid who is into eBay sales and give him a commission for each sale though. That seems to be a win-win-win. I get rid of them and get a bit back, he gets to do what interests him and makes a small commission, and the buyer gets to enjoy what is currently stored away.

I dont sell my watches, I trade them in the purchase transaction for others. I just traded two watches as part of a transaction for an Aqua Terra.

If I bought the watch for under 1k, and the resale market for it is weak, I give it away to a nice home.

As noted above, do the time, and once you have been here long enough and posted enough, then you might try selling them here. And, while you're waiting, post them on the bay at a price that will allow you to recover the amount that you want--whether they sell or not, it doesn't hurt much to try. I always start here with my lowest acceptable price as my asking price, and if it doesn't sell in a week or two, then I put them on the bay at a higher price--and I have sold every single one (out of more than 200) in less than a month, made the minimum (and often more) that I was looking for, and have had zero issues with "bad" buyers.

Better take the hit sooner than later. The older they get the more the value drops

Try to take a 4 week wait before buying something new. See - want - wait 4 weeks. If you still want it its pbb a well thought out purchase

I have so often been hoovering over that 'order' button and then forcing myself to wait. Half the time I even forget the 4 weeks passed by. Meaning I dont really want it

Depends on the watch

I'm kind of in the same boat. I want to really drastically reduce my collection. I have too many watches now and feel like the ones I really want to wear aren't getting enough wrist time, and if I wasn't sacrificing wrist time, the others would never get worn.

Maybe I'll get some posted this weekend.

If you do decide to give away a watch, there is a great thread here called “Pay it forward!” started by forum member RobMc. You list something for free, someone claims it, then they list an item, and so on. If you decide to give something away, it’s a cool way to share within the forum.

I’ve consolidated my collection twice now. I also struggle with the idea of selling my watches at a huge loss but if you never wear them you’re losing 100%. I’d say it’s better to get something for them than let them sit and collect dust. Losing money is just part kf the hobby...

I’ve started buying exclusively pre-owned so I can let someone else take the hit for me and don’t have to worry about losing big on resale anymore.

Me too. Almost exclusively pre-owned now for me. So many WIS are so careful with their watches, you can find some pre-owned that are almost perfect.
