given the exact same watch, would you go with steel or titanium?

I'm a bit torn at the moment. I'm looking at 2 watches that are essentially the same except for case material. Things to consider would of course be weight, but also looks (titanium seems to be more gray and has less of a shine than steel) but also scratch resistance. Are there any other considerations? which would you choose?

in my case there is a slight price difference but not significant enough to affect the decision

Personally I would choose titanium due to its lighter weight and resistance to corrosion and chemicals. Wearability is quite important to me.

I've owned a number of each, titanium is nice and light weight but not as scratch resistant as one might think and when it does scratch it can be difficult to blend the scratch into the finish. Scratches are most often a lighter/brighter color than the case finish. Nowadays I prefer good old stainless. More feel on my arm and for most part any scratches blend in as part of the history of the watch. It's 100% personal choice so your mileage may vary.

Titanium for me. Comfort wearing a watch will always be one of my top priorities, otherwise it's going to get left in the watch box for my other watches. The weight of a titanium watch contributes so much to all-day wearing comfort, especially watches with a full titanium bracelet. I like the look of bracelets, but usually prefer straps for comfort. Some of the only watches I can wear on full bracelet are titanium.

I know some people prefer the "heft" of steel/gold, especially with automatic watches, where it's easy to associate weight with quality. So really it's all personal preference. I just feel like comfort of wearing a watch will almost always trump any other negatives of titanium.

I agree entirely. Comfort is a big factor for me enjoying titanium. I find I enjoy the “dull” gray color which is befitting for a tool watch. Also, many manufacturers apply a coating which helps significantly in resisting scratches. My titanium Citizen diver has held up quite well.

Steel. I’d also probably recommend avoiding the Chinese homages. I have more than a few and now would rather have a nice micro brand or second hand “real” watch. There’s just always something off with these homages, especially with the font or text used on the dial. It’s never perfectly polished.

Aluminum dents like its made of peanut butter. Sorry, Alyouminnie-Um for the Brits. You know they love a good vowel thrown in where they don't need to be!

In all seriousness, I had one aluminum watch. It was eh. There is the corrosion issue with steel casebacks, it does dent easily, it can UV rot and chalk out if uncoated etc.

if its a diver or a daily wear watch, then Titanium. If its a dress watch or a watch that is worn less frequently pick steel. (also assume steel is usually priced a little less)

If you are hard on watches, steel may be better for all use cases.

I would only ever consider grade 5 titanium, if not available, then steel.

If grade 5 titanium is available, then it depends. For a dress watch, steel will look more dressy, especially if it is brushed. For a casual watch whereby a darker colour may look better, and/or it is brushed, titanium may be very nice.

Titanium is also much lighter, so it is important the watch is not too top heavy with Titanium. If this condition can be met, then yes, Titanium is probably going to be more comfortable.
