Go to vacation/travel watch?

Just got back from vacation. Didn't deliberate at all on which watch to bring with me, mostly cuz I just beat the tar out of this one. Almost bought a gmt for the journey (and realized why travelers like them, as I routinely wondered what time it was at home/last time zone I was in when out of range for cell service).

What's your preference and why?

Usually this guy. Rugged enough for most trips, clean enough to pass for the fancy stuff, basic enough that it won't jump out as valuable, special enough to feel special, rare enough that a good salesperson can tell I'm not the usual person just hunting for 'gram pics when I try out something nice.

Nice trip. But India is tricky for even a GMT, right, because it’s a half-hour off? I think you made the right choice.

My choice of travel watch depends on the destination and use. Oris D65, Oris pointer date with gold bezel, Longines GMT, Kuoe field watch, or Timex Expedition have all done duty.

@Aviron You have a good eye! And yes, India is a half hour and Nepal is 45min hah, a little odd. All good options you've got- I love the pointer date. I wanted to try on a Longines Zulu time at my stop in Qatar but the shop didn't have one.

@sleepyhead123 Good, thoughtful criteria. Don't know much about speedy's but you've photoshopped something out in the pic no? why's that?

The limited edition number.

There are a few watches that cover the 15/30/45 minute offsets. One that comes to mind is that crazy VC worldtimer. It even has Eucla, for all those few hundred bunny rabbit fearing naked kanagroo frolickers that care to buy a watch that's over $30k so they can tell home time when they travel to the outside world.

It used to be my old West Coast Time navigator watch because it was cheap and reliable. I sold it a while back. Took my Speedmaster Mark 4.5 to Vienna a few months ago because I like a day-date watch while traveling.

Gotta have pics.

I like to enjoy my travels and have fun, and what can be more fun than an inexpensive quartz watch with a beautiful dial layout that's also able to track a second time zone. For me, that would be my:

1. Dan Henry 1963 with a 12 hour dial,
2. Seiko Flightmasters (black and blue panda dials) with alarm and second time zone tracker, and
3. Timex Waterbury GMT
4. Casio AE1200 World Timer

PS It doesn't look like Tapatalk allows me to post pics from my gallery when I use my phone....bummer!

Tudor Black Bay GMT.

  • 200m water resistant for hotel pools
  • Lume for groggy jet lag wakeups
  • GMT for time zone shifts
  • Date for keeping me knowing what day it is!
  • Sapphire and steel for general toughness and leisure use
  • Reasonably dressy for business meetings
  • Conventional colour scheme so doesn't attract attention
  • 80-hour power reserve although I doubt it will be still for that long as my only watch on a trip!

Not a dive watch but the 200m WR rating gives me the confidence to take it hiking, swimming, camping and anything travel related.

I almost always travel with my Citizen AT9035-51a - It's got the H820 radio controlled world timer movement in it - so it's "always" set to the correct time. I'll usually augment that with my Hager GMT. My Apple Watch always goes with me too, but for entirely different reasons (It's really a Fitbit with more gizmos).

I also almost always throw my Marathon tritium GPQ in the bag - usually my Dopp kit - because I sometimes use it to sleep with, if the Apple Watch is low on battery, and because it's just another beater watch you can just throw around.

My typical line up for travel (depending on where I'm going) looks like this:

International Travel (e.g. EU, India, Japan, etc.):
  1. Citizen AT9035-51a
  2. My Hager GMT
  3. Either my Orient Worldtimer, maybe my Hager Aqua/Tudor BB Homage or my Tsao Legacy.
Domestic Travel (for work):
  1. Citizen AT9035-51a
  2. My Tsao Legacy or one of my Hagers
  3. Another piece based on my mood
Vacation Travel:
  • Depends entirely on my mood and where we're going.
  • Will always include one quartz
  • Will always include one auto/mechanical
  • Will always include something I can swim in (may be one of the ones above)
  • Usually won't be more than 3 watches
As an example of what I'm planning for an upcoming Florida trip for work:
  • The Citizen (on FKM rubber)
  • The Hager GMT on a leather strap (quick release so I can swap for a silicone)
  • Will pick either my Hager Aqua or my Tsao Legacy for the third.
For the upcoming family vacation to Disney where my daughter & son & I will be "Disney bounding" to look like Star Wars characters?
  • My Tsao Constellation Panda on a bright orange rubber strap (looks like Rebel Pilot colors
  • Either my Tsao Legacy (because I like it) or my Hager GMT on a White Silicone band (because it uses Stormtrooper colors)
  • Some other third watch. Maybe.
  • The Apple Watch with the Mickey Mouse face...

These two make a lot of sense to me as travel watches.

Casio Oceanus OCW-T4000 and Casio ProTrek PRW-50. The former works for more languid occasions, and the latter for more outdoors stuff.

Image

The Oceanus is 100m water resistant, MB6/Bluetooth, solar, and titanium. It easily displays two time zones at a glance and looks good doing it. The 12 o’clock sub-dial is local time in 24-hour format (for those groggy “what time is it?” questions in a dark and strange hotel room under jet lag). The 9 o’clock is day of the week. The 6 o’clock displays either the second time zone, or in stopwatch mode, is a 24-hour chronograph.

The ProTrek has lume on the hands and indices, and also a UV backlight. It’s solar and MB6. It has a screwdown crown and 100m water resistance. It has a second time zone display, stopwatch, countdown timer, and five alarms. It also has an altimeter, barometer, compass, and thermometer. It has a pressure change (weather alert) warning function.

Neither is a “GADA.” But each covers a good 70% of the range of “appropriate for the setting and activity,” with the Oceanus a little more office/dinner-worthy.

Nice discussion idea. [emoji106]

I would wear my Glycine Combat Sub. Mine is the PVC model, GL0290. Has good accuracy, does not stand out, fits nicely under a shirt cuff, has good Lume, doesn’t draw any unwarranted attention. Vance.
