Oh, and I don't now what ,made my voice sound funny in parts, probably the computer.

It's a cartridge-converter fountain pen. A proper piston-filler has the piston built into the pen, with just the blind-cap at the very top of the barrel unscrewing. Your Sheaffer has the entire barrel unscrewing, revealing the converter inside.

That said, the basic filling-principle is the same.
