HAQ candidate - Certina DS Pilot chronograph

Quick search of the forum, but couldn't find anything on this Certina.

There are two Certina chronograph models using movement ETA 251.264 that caught my eye earlier.

What's interesting about these is that they're chronographs but their layout is not that of a typical chrono. It's rather elegant, and somewhat reminiscent of the Pilot Watch A-13A that was discussed some time ago on the forum.

From that same thread, the fact that 251.264 is offered in both PD and non-PD guises was discussed (A-13A is, unfortunately, non-PD).

Annoyingly, the (UK) Certina website doesn't specify whether they're using PD or not. I'd assume that they are using the PD variant, and some of the UK AD's say that it's PD on their website, but the UK Certina website just lists "252.264".

Model references are:

C024.617.16.042.00
C024.617.36.092.00

Currently these can be picked up for around ÂŁ500-600 new from AD's in the UK, probably less with a bit of bargaining. RRP is ÂŁ735 and ÂŁ765.

I don't remember seeing these single-subdial ETA chronograph movements before. So I looked them up in the ETA catalog retrieved Nov 2023 (attached) and found that Certina are just not using the upper two registers:

At the watch level, Certina not indicating PreciDrive is equivalent to the absence of a 10 spy claim. How do you evaluate the UK ADs who indicate that the watch is PD?

Cue obligatory email to Certina UK.

I await their response and will update here shortly.

In my experience, they're good at responding and will provide a satisfactory answer to the question as to whether the PD variant of 251.264 is used in this watch.

Of course, if it is confirmed to be a PD, they won't offer any commitment to performance of said PD movement ;)

I think so.

Doesn't warrant further input.

May be worth retaining the thread though rather than moving. A lesson to other members that, before putting forward a potential HAQ candidate, do your background due diligence beforehand. But in the words of Nic Cage in Con Air: "... (Mr. Moderator) this is your barbeque, man".
