Hi all,
As the Title suggests, I am brand new to collecting luxury watches. I have decided on a 1st watch, (Speedy 3220.80) and have the name of the preferred AD. I am nervous because after reading a lot of posts on the maintenance of automatic watches it seems as though you have to service them after 5-7 years and Omega's service can be hit or miss. What do Omega owners do? Find a watchmaker? Or go to the AD and hope for good service? Sorry if these are basic questions, but as I said I'm new to all of this.

-There is (hardly) any need to worry about the service; bear in mind that it is more likely that someone will post about their service experience if it is a bad one than if everything works out just fine (This is not to say that Omega does not have their issues; they do (IMHO)).

Anyway, using a local (competent!) watchmaker is a good idea; even if the watch is sent on from there to Omega, at least you have a brick-and-mortar place to go if the service you requested leaves anything to be desired. Most issues are simpler to sort out face-to-face than if you're just another mail in their inbox.

Seriously, there are good and bad watch servicing options... just like anything else in life. You have a good service center nearby in Philly, but with shipping you could ship to Omega in Bienne, CH or Nesbit's in Seattle as easy an having it worked on locally.

People seem to be scared of owning a nice watch. Sure it cost something more than a Timex from your local Wal-Mart, but it still just tells time... in an elegant, intriguing and mechanical way.

Hi Lou, welcome to the forum!

Don't worry too much about it, I am sure you will enjoying owning and wearing your Speedy and if you have any question this is a great place to ask for advice and answer! Omega mechanical watches are very well made and your Speedy is going to give you many years of great service and enjoyment :-!

Do what I did. I found a good local watchmaker (actually two) that I trust. I personally hand the watch to either of them and we personally inspect the condition of the watch when I leave it and we both make notes. When I pick the watch up, we do another inspection to make sure all is OK.

There are many good competent watchmakers around. It's the "service technicians" that I fear.
