The movements are both quartz and are both high quality. The build quality is similar between them and the materials are both high quality also. These two watches are very different, however. One's a diver and one's a chrono military watch. Really it's hard to say which is "better." If you're going to dive with it, go with the Marathon. If you're not, the chronograph adds some great features and functionality.

What are you planning on doing with it -- what draws you to each watch?

Main use of the watch is daily rotation with other divers. I really like the massive look of the Tsar and the alarm of the 1842. The Tritium Vial Technology is also a MUST. I am really leaning towards the 1842 due to the alarm but I have always wanted a Tsar.
