I'm inclined to think it's a day/night indicator, similar to the 31681, just with a different presentation. O|
Still, a confirmation from the experts here would reassure me! :-!

The 31679 movement is a true 28 day Moonphase movement. Did the watch come with an instruction manual? Should go over that in the manual.
