I have inherited my grandfather's (long since RIP) solid gold Waltham pocket watch but know very little about it. I'd like to open up the back to ID the serial number but I'm not sure how it opens and I don't want to damage it. It's in beautiful condition and very ornate. One of the best examples I have seen on the net.

Any tips on safely opening the back would be much appreciated from a PW noob. :thanks

Also, one day I should get it serviced, but I'm not sure who to trust it to. I'm in Australia, so any tips on locating someone good, let me know. Am I able to polish the gold case safely?

For a good, Australian watchmaker, I would suggest these fellows:

They repaired my Waltham and it works fine now. As for polishing the case, best to let the watchmaker do that. But if you must, a very light polish with a gold-cloth should do. Some photographs of the case, dial and movement will help us date the watch for you.
