Re: A few historical figures and their watches

Another Space Watch.

Neil Armstrong wore a Wittnauer All proof watch for the Gemini 8 mission.

Here, although a little grainy you can see it on his wrist after the hatch has been sprung open.

Armstrong wore the watch as a tribute to his friend Jimmie Mattern who 33 years earlier had worn the watch in his attempt to break the world record for aerial circumnavigation of the globe.

However the attempt ended in a crash landing in Siberia. Mattern was eventually rescued by Eskimos. Although Mattern failed in his record circumnavigation the All proof did manage to circle the world many times on the wrist of Neil Armstrong.

Thank you for the reply. It's odd, out of all the pics of Stalin out there; you never see him with a watch.
That's cos the time at any given moment was whatever time Stalin decided that it was - unless you fancied a one-way trip to Siberia

The man was just genuinely odd. I saw a few papers he wrote for school as a child, extolling the vital importance of individual Liberty, Choice, and Freedom in general. Very shocking. Though verified as having been written by a young Stalin. One wonders what could have been....

Okay, back to watches.

I believe T.E. Lawrence wore an Omega. Isn't it in the Omega museum?

There have been criticisms made of zombie thread resurrections.
However I think this thread is a perfect example of why resurrections can be a great thing.
I would never have read this ( and therefore been educated) if it weren't for TempusExMachina.

Yes, some threads simply should not die.
I did edit that post, as Mahatma has a semi religious following. I do not want to upset our Indian friends!!
Lol thank you. Being Indian, along side Mahatma Gandhi, who was noted for his abstemious lifestyle, our other famous and iconic figure was our first PM Jawaharlal Nehru. This is a picture of him in a rather contemplative pose. The watch I have no idea about but if any of you do, that would be great.

John F. Kennedy's 18kt gold Rolex day/date, ca. 1962. The watch was given to him by Marilyn Monroe, with the case back inscription that reads, "JACK With love as always from MARILYN May 29th 1962":

Tempus - Many members have posted a tremendous amount of very helpful and reliable information on this site over many years. In consideration of their effort, which has imparted credibility and respectability to this site, I request you to consider whether there has ever been any provenance presented on the internet that would provide any credence to the statements purported by Bill Panagopulos to have been made by the 'English citizen' that auctioned the subject watch through the Bill Panagopulos fools' exploitation scam, the Alexander Auction House in Greenwich, Connecticut, in October 2005.

The serial number 1,296,419 unequivocally dates the production of the auctioned watch to late 1965. Any Rolex watch produced prior to 1964 would have a serial number less than 1,028,000. There exists on the internet a huge data base of serial number information to verify the above statement.

I have never considered that any credibility could be attached to auction claims regarding the purported Marilyn Monroe gift represented in the excerpt from your post when I previously read these in CBS news posts and on various blogs. No statement by anyone credible has ever been made to substantiate the fable presented in 2005 by the Alexander Auction House. In fact, the Alexander Auction House has never divulged the identity of the purported successful bidder.

I urge you to consider removing this portion of your post if you consider after 'googling' the keywords 'reznikoff' and 'monroe' and separately 'bill panagopulos' and 'suicide', that you might have inadvertently propagated slander-for-profit perpetrated by Panagopolus against two fellow American citizens now deceased. By participating intelligently, we can avoid causing this site to fall below the standards which attracted both you and me to it when we first discovered WUS.

Regards, Paul

The Girard Perregaux watch that became the property of Porfirio Diaz would be a nice addition to this thread. I believe GP acquired this watch, but I can't find any decent pictures of this original, three gold bridges watch.

BTW, this is a great thread.
Fidel Castro amd his Rolex GMT-Master. Rather capitalist of him.
