Actually I helped the Physics section building a solar cell in 2006. They needed expertise from a chemical guy. I believe the cell was titanium dioxide (TiO2) based. As you see, a basic solar cell is white. The hardest problem was to find conducting glass plates. I found some old pictures. The pictures are long shutter time recordings (probably 15 seconds each picture!) made in the dark lab. In real the lamps were very weak and you could only see the solar cell and the lamp. It looks very much like the solar cell we build at the lab.
