Contrary to urban myths, you can go into the water with a 100m watch and get it wet — you just can't dive with it.

You need one of these to even splash your hands in water, don't you know?

Yes. The only watch that can survive hand washing. As long as it's gently dabbed dry with a soft micro fibre towel immediately after that. Its "Ultra Deep" rating means we can lower our hands slightly deeper towards the bottom of the bathroom sink while washing.

Unless there is something wrong with the seals, he could dive with it. Max depth for recreational SCUBA is 30-40 meters. The watch might not be compliant with the ISO dive standard in some ways, or Seiko might not want to spend the $$ meeting every aspect of the standard for a Seiko 5, but water resistance to 100 meters meets the ISO 6425 minimum.

Try it. See if their WR rating lives up to it's billing.......
