Incoming – Milus Triretrograde

The FedEx man dropped off a little present (from me, to me) today - the Milus Herios TriRetrograde. This is my first high-end “boutique” brand watch, and I think this Milus may be the first for the WUS crowd, so I thought I would post a quick and dirty review. I apologize in advance for the quality of the pics. I rushed the pictures in my office as the camera battery was dying. I have included some stock photos so everyone can appreciate the beauty of the watch and movement that I was not able to capture.

What a surprise, a brown box. The watch was very well packed and secured.

The Milus outer box.

The watch is stored in an absolutely beautiful wood case. Now, onto the watch… The watch features a rectangular case, a curved sapphire crystal, a black dial, and an alligator strap. The watch utilizes a self-winding mechanical movement with three alternating retrograde second indicators, thus the name "TriRetrograde". For those who are not familiar, a retrograde counter is one that goes in one direction only without making a circle. When the hand or counter reaches one end it jumps back to the starting point. This watch has three retrograde counters each counting twenty seconds. Water resistance is 30 meters.

The watch is a stunner in person(which is why it has won several design awards). I opted for the black dial (HERT-SP01) over the white dial and was lucky to secure the only one available. The face has a unique marriage of classical elements and exposed mechanical intricacy. The dial includes art-deco fashioned numerals running around a partially skeletonized view of the movement. The hands are skeletonized, blued steel.
The detailing on the movement is incredible and I can’t keep my eyes off the THREE retrograde second hands.

Here are some stock photos, better than what I could take at the moment-

The case is 42mm x 42mm, so it is not small by any means. It is really not “cuffable” but I’m not sure a watch this beautiful and mechanically complex is meant to be hidden by a shirt cuff. Well, at least that is my excuse for wearing it on my 6.75 wrist. The curve of the case does aid in cutting down the watch size and making it wear perhaps a bit smaller on the wrist.

I tried to capture a movie of the movement, but it didn’t come out so great. I’ll point anyone interested to Milus’ movie at http://www.milus.com/modules/?video=/resources/video/intro_512x288.flv

Yes, new to me too, and indeed a cool video. I dig the Massive Attack vibe to the BGM. b-)

Congratulations on picking up that fine looking watch. :-!

The movement uses an ETA as its base, with a Milus 3838 retrograde module.
And a fine looking watch it is! Five thumbs up from me. |> |> |> |> |>
