Ingersoll

Hi, another newbie here. I'm looking into buying a new watch. I like the look of Ingersoll. Has anybody got any experience with one of those? I know they've got a Chinese movement.

Thanks.

Niels.

Welcome to the forum Niels!
I can't recall that brand being discussed but hopefully someone will have something to tell you.
I had almost forgotten this Watch brand. But recently it has appeared on a couple of shopping channels here in the UK. (bid.tv and price-drop.tv).

All the ones I have seen have been covered either in diamonds, or semi precious stones, and have all had quartz movements. All of them too flash for my taste, but each to his own.
Hmmm,

Not the ones I've seen. They're probably not too original but I like the look of them. A jeweler in Den Haag where I live sells them with a two year warranty.

Those Ingersoll watches are produced under the european part of the original trademark. The US trademark is still owned by Timex, the european by Zeon, an UK low price watches producer.
The trademark rights have been granted to a German company (Cristano or similar name) two years ago and they started a larger scaled production of an entirely mechanical collection of watches with a vintage look. All are fitted with chinese movements and most of them look like chronographs but are in fact multi-functions watches only.
They've sold extremly well in the beginning, most larger department stores offered them, mail order catalogues included some models and many jewellers also had them. The owners of the german company have been some kind of distributor of other brands before and have a large network of sales agents. Low priced (all below 200 EUR in the beginning), a watch for the newbies, those that ever wanted a mechanical watch but hesitated to spend to much money for it. The designs are good but often, let's call it friendly 'hommages', of known watches of famous brands.
Here's the website:

The quality was really bad in the beginning, i've heared of several jewellers that had up to 50% returns, we also repaired a lot of them, quite bad made movements with several tricks that could cause defects very easily, i think they've improved the quality but i haven't seen one of the new productions yet.
Zeon has something to do with the productions, maybe the watches are made in the same factories on order only, anyway, they offer also Ingersoll branded watches but those (the 'diamond' studded ones) look even worser, just feed for the masses on tv shopping channels.

Thanks for the information. Very usefull. The jeweler I went to had some good looking modells. And they're affordable. The most expensive modell cost round about 250 euros. The lady I talked to in the shop was very upfront about the quality and the movement. She told me right away about the movement being Chinese. I am a newbie so this might be nice starter for me. But I'm looking at other things as well. Might decide to spend just a bit more. Maybe an Archimede...

Niels.
One correction to my previous post:
The one above is a dealer only, this is the Ingersoll (Cristano) website:
http://www.ingersolluhren.de/
As most will see many designs look familiar, Breguet, Longines, Zeno etc.
I wouldn't recommend them, i've asked our inhouse watchmaker some hours ago and he remembred some model names that were extremly bad: Ghandi (yes, no spelling mistake, skeleton), Little Horn and Cheyenne.
Take a Seiko, a Zeno, a Stowa or Archimede (to name some) instead, all have models at this price level and are reliable.

A "Ghandi" skeleton watch??? :-D :-D :-D :-D
Ingersoll is not a Watch I would particularly want to own. I have always thought of them as a bottom of the barrel type of brand like Timex.

You can buy plenty of good Watches today, like Seiko, for very good prices.
I was wrong, it's called Gandhi (notice the h, but it is in fact referring to M. Ghandi), model can be found here:

Their Ingersoll 'history' names Mahatma Ghandi as one of the wearers of an Ingersoll (although the one who translated the text mistyped the name):
Many famous individuals wore an loved their Ingersoll watches like Thomas Drake the circumnavigator or A. Edison, T.Roosevelt and James Dean. In historic books for example it is written about Mahatma Gandhi and his Ingersoll watch.

Yes, even the original US made Ingersoll watches have been mass produced cheap watches, so called Dollar watches, price of exactly one dollar at their time. Maybe they continue the basic idea behind the brand ... (but regarding the production costs only)
The designs are straight from the Millionsmart catalogue, which is a big Chinese company that supplies cases and movements to anyone that wants to put a name on a watch like Ingersoll, Aeromatic, Louis Bolle, and many of the Ebay brands.

I wouldn't pay 250 Euros for one. The watches with Chinese movements are going up in price. Seagulls that were sold to some forum members, including myself were $125 and now they have doubled in price. The Chinese really need to work on Quality control and develop their own product instead of 3rd party watches that are cheap.
Thanks everybody for the information. Well, not an Ingersoll then. I'll look into buying an Archimede or maybe one of the other brands mentioned.

Errrm, if this is referring to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (known to his many friends and admirers as the "Mahatma"), then I think the correct spelling is in fact G a n d h i .
Yes, you are right, seems to be a common mistake, i found several websites that used it wrong.
I bought an Ingersoll Sioux in June, 2008 at a reputable shop here in Frankfurt. The watch has never told time well. It runs about an hour fast every 24 hours. I've had to send it in twice already, and will be picking it up tomorrow. The workshop has had it for 3 months!!!

If it still isn't working well tomorrow, I'm going to get my money back. It has been a nightmare. We'll see how it turns out.

Threadomancy, eh?

Well, people do need to be warned. I for one will be interested to see if your problems are solved.

It is really sad to see these names being tarnished so, I have an ingersoll pocket watch. Sure, its not so flash, but I'm sure the fellow who bought it in the 1920's thought much of it at the time (until perhaps his finances changed for the better ;) ).

At least the english watchmakers have been spared (as far as I know) this "zombification" (read as: failed resurrection -- like, imagine a phoenix's dismay when it finds out that it has spawned without any feathers this time round, or perhaps with a lame wing). If one cannot create something to a certain standard one should create a new name, and not use an old one!

I swear, if this ever happens to anything like JW Benson people will die, I haven't yet determined exactly how many, but no doubt a considerable number :-| (ask me again if the time ever comes to pass)
One tends to pick up a distinct lingo, "geek-speak", by hanging around with the wrong (or right :p) crowd.

Well, I got my Ingersoll Sioux back from the shop yesterday and it seems to be running better now. Only 5 seconds slow over the last 24 hours.:-!

And yes, I did realise I was reviving a dead thread, but I did it for the benefit of posterity. And because I couldn't find more recent threads. :)

Hmmm, now a week later, it seems to be running 15 seconds fast. Grrr.
