I'm semi new to watches and have a question that is probably stupid, but can I take a Quartz watch and replace the movement with an automatic movement and change the watch dial as well as hands, so I'm really only keeping the case?

If it fits then I guess yes. However automatic movemetns usually are a lot thicker so usually would not fit in a quartz watch case.

Get yourself into some of the older Seiko divers. It'll blow your mind what's around for them.

Basically the 6309 (auto) and the 7548 (quartz) are completely interchangeable. The movement of the quartz is based on the mainplate of the auto, so dials, hands ect are completely interchangeable. There's a huge aftermarket for them as they are very popular for modding.

I personally prefer to keep them somewhat authentic, so i've only gone as far as putting the quartz movement and dial into the auto cushion cases. The 6309-7040 or 7049 for US market is the cushion case, the later 6309-7290 is what's known as a slim case. That case is the same as a 7548.
