For those of you who missed out on the hit Golden Tuna Spring Drive last year, Seiko has introduced a limited production encore, the Marine Master SBDB009. Like its golden predecessor, it will be 50.5mm. It'll also have a titanium construction and shroud with DLC coating. It will be water resistant to 600 meters.

For those who may not know, the 5R65 is actually the same movement you get in a Grand Seiko spring drive (the 9R65) but with different finishing and rotor. Of course, that doesn't matter since, being a hardcore dive watch, you can't see the movement anyway. But you still benefit from the same 3 day power reserve and +1/-1 second per day accuracy. It's actually one of the most affordable ways to get into a spring drive today at just $4200. In a way, the best competition for the new Grand Seiko quartz diver is this Seiko.

Although the new SBDB009 will not be a limited edition, Seiko is calling it limited production. That means they will make a fixed, small number per year and shut down their production until next year. If you missed the Golden Tuna SBDB008 or want a new spring drive diver, this is the one to get.

Remember, through the month of May, if you buy any new spring drive or automatic Grand Seiko, the new GS quartz diver, or even this SBDB009, we will throw in a free regular production Prospex. You can view the Prospexes available in America (and we will be adding more as Seiko gets us more information) at Seiko Prospex | Timeless Luxury Watches .

Certainly many guys will love the SBDB009, but I would rather see Seiko develop a new solar variant of the SBBN017.

The SBDB009 is too big and too expensive for my personal preferences.

I agree on the size of this Tuna. It seems massive.

Even as a Tuna owner, I'm still not sold on the face of this new Spring Drive Tuna. The new hands just don't feel "Tuna-ish." I love the technology and the rest of the watch, though. If I get to see it in person, I might change my mind. I do like that they went for an all-black color scheme.

Wish there was a non-black version of this as well. I want a Spring Drive and I want a Tuna, so this is a good combo to fill both holes in my life... But I really want a stainless/titanium brushed finish.

You might like the Prospex Kinetic line. It's got a similar look but is available in stainless.

They're also substantially more affordable than the spring drive tuna.

Those are nice... But they are no Tuna. Or Spring Drive.... Tuna Spring Drive seems to be one of the less expensive Spring Drives you can obtain as well....

That about sums it up.

I don't like the hands, the hour markers, etc.

However, I do like the technology and I always am a sucker for all-black styling.

I absolutely love SEIKOs and I especially love their diver's watches. But this... The "fuel" gauge uses E and F for Empty and Full. Okay, not too bad. BUT, it's back assward! The F should be at the top of the dial and the E should be at the bottom. Don't the designers own cars?! Maybe they take the train in Japan and totally missed this concept. I did a quick google search to see what their other Spring Drives look like and most do not include the E&F with their gauges; last year's SBDB008 and now this SBDB009 use this concept while the rest use plain hands without lettering on the dial. Sadly, it's a deal killer for me.

Yeah, if you think about it, it costs almost exactly as much as the new quartz diver Grand Seiko. Of course, it doesn't have the GS' finishing, but it's still a pretty killer deal.

I'm not sure why Seiko does this. Pretty much all power reserves in current Seikos (mechanical and spring drives both) are upside down. It doesn't bother me, but it does perplex me.

I assume they own cars. However, you are assuming fuel gauges are the same outside the United States. It is very possible fuel gauges are reversed in some countries outside the United States.

I have been inside some very expensive JDM cars, but that was a long time ago and I don't remember what the fuel gauges looked like.

You realize the steering wheel is on the other side of the vehicle in many countries outside the United States?

You realize the way the Japanese read a printed page in Japanese is reversed from the way we read a printed page in English?

And so on and so forth.

I don't think the fuel gauge is reversed in Japan. I'm not sure what caused the change, but it's fairly recent. There is one movement they actually ostensibly redesigned to incorporate the new power reserve decision, the 6R20 and 6R21. The only major difference between them is the power reserve direction.

Of course, you can use the exact same movement and make the power reserve go up, you just put the hand on pointing the other way and design the dial around it. So it's very clear that this is intentional on Seiko's part, part of an overall corporate initiative from the bottom to the top.

Actually, I do have a SBDB008 on my rather small wrist (6.5" or 6.75"). It does not look big at all. It looks massive in pictures, not on a wrist, even on a small one. I do love it.

I'm not terribly impressed with any of these. The Tuna looks decidedly un-Tuna due to the hands and the reserve indicator design is goofy. The new Kinetics looked awesome until I found other pictures, those slots cut into the sides for windows look awful.
