Hey all,

I was going to post this in the existing Ironman appreciation thread, but it's not limited to that brand & model. Here's my need for this feature - I run and do some speed training. During the day, I leave the stopwatch mode on, sprint for 2 minutes, walk for 1 minute, 90 seconds / 30 seconds, etc. I can keep looking at the digital chronograph because I can see the whole watch face in the daylight. Right now, doing this at night is almost impossible for me because even the light on my watch doesn't work. I could buy a new Ironman with indiglo, but then I would have to use one hand to turn the light on, while also keeping my feet moving and looking at the watch for the time. As long as I'm getting a new-ish watch, I'd rather have the option to keep the chronograph displayed and lit, at least for several minutes at a time. I don't want to have to reach my right hand over to my left wrist to hit a button; I'd like it to just stay on for the duration of my workout.

I have an ancient Timex Ironman LCD watch with a push-button light that doesn't really light up anything. I was looking at the new models, which mostly have some kind of indiglo, which is much better. However, outside of "night mode" where any button (not just the indiglo button) will light up the watch, I don't see an option for turning the light "on" to leave it lit for several minutes at a time.

Any thoughts / recommendations? Ideal would be a cheap digital watch with a setting to keep the face illuminated for some time. I do not want a smart watch for this purpose, and an analog watch with charged-up lume is not what I'd prefer to use. Style etc. do not matter.

Thanks!

My old Ironman, still ticking but not illuminating much:

Get smartwatch.
I also run during later hours and it sucks.
Or just keep pushing button.
Casio G-shock is not good substitute for Ironman when it comes to lap timing.
There are dedicated sport models from Casio but they have LED back light.
Smartwatch is either always on or good at reacting to your wrist movements.
The cheapest way is keep push button on your Ironman.
I do the same.

Oh to be clear it doesn't stay on per ssei it just turns on whenever you hit a button so you don't have to hit Indiglo to see it so for example if you want to hit your splits or or stop wtc or your time down beeps itll be glowing.

I think that this would run down a battery pretty quickly, so you might be better off with something solar powered. I am not aware of any Ironman watches that suit.

I saw a review of the Casio DB-E30 which is solar and has auto illumination so it automatically comes on at night whenever you lift your wrist to see the time. They are only around $30, so affordable. Here is a picture from a post by member LutFi.

Thanks but i'm a bit lost now. I tried to be clear.

Is there a running watch that will let you keep the face lit without pressing a button?

Thanks in advance if anyone knows.
I would never actually thought that I would agree with the recomendation of the Smart Watch. A smart watch will light up when you bring it to the correct angle for viewing. But it will not remain on.

Similarly, with Indiglo even with Night Mode which is present at all newer Ironman models, it will allow you to activate Indiglo with any button, but it also will not remain lit. it only remains lit for a few seconds.

Smart watch makes a lot of sense. I use separate watch for running and it really to get best functions and unlimited EL.
Charged once in wild it serves me well.
Using non solar watch with EL always on will end battery in very limited time unless you run for 10-15 minutes.
Operating EL for 40-60 min straight could be damaging to the watch and EL.
1hr run with EL on equal to projected 2.5 years of normal watch use. Bottom line always on EL for long time is not good at all.
I strongly suggest to research smart watches and software options available for your exercise routine.

Thanks guys. I’m probably just getting the indiglo Ironman. I already use my smart phone to track distance speed heart rate etc. so no interest in a smart watch. Really, I don’t run at night specifically sprinting that often. Just would’ve been a nice option.
