I've come across similar listings on poshmark and mercari. I've reported on every site I come across these listings on, but it appears that reporting basically does nothing. If you browse these kind of sites, once in a blue moon you'll find a nice vintage watch, or a luxury watch sold by someone who's not really into watches and doesn't know their worth, or a cheaper seiko for a good price, but there are lots of fakes and scams out there. Best to just stay away, honestly.

Yes. One of the few places I can think of where fakes of all types and seemingly just whatever is allowed to be listed on a major platform. Even outside of that, the the core of the business model is completely rotten, with virtually every category taken over by “handmade” drop shipped china junk.

This. It used to be a niche place for some quality handmade goods. It's now 98% garbage.

Etsy was originally founded as a marketplace for crafters and artists to sell handmade goods. Now I see more resellers and Chinese produces items, and less handmade stuff. Google searches for watches have taken me to etsy a few times and I thought - no one hand makes brand name watches so what are they doing there? So yes, they have become an alternate to ebay essentially (and maybe less policed for non-genuine products). The watches I see there are usuall a. overprices trying to lure an uneducated buyer, b. frankenwatches from India, or c. dubious pedigree that I wouldn't take a chance on.

The market for luxury watches has fallen.

One of the sellers just responded. See screenshot below. So it’s 99% genuine, huh? And box and papers too?!?😂

I just reported them. WUS mods, please forgive me for starting this thread; I know we’re not supposed to discuss fakes but I wasn’t sure. I never thought I’d live to see Replicants popping up on Etsy.

Absolutely no way I would ever buy a watch on Etsy. There are some fantastic strap makers there, though. Indonesian based 7th Creation is a long time favorite of mine. I bought a few of Hodink's $125 straps when they were closing them out for $25. 7th C's straps are much better than the Hodink stuff.

These are absolutely hand made as well. Any size you want, thread color you want, pattern you want, etc etc etc.

This ^^^^^

I view Etsy as a place to buy nice handmade straps. You have to do some searching but they're out there.

Unless you know nothing about watches of course, then you probably get scammed.

My mother had dementia, and I went round to see her one day, and she had a pair of rubber heal cushions.

She proudly showed me, and said how comfortable they were.

Some kind soul had charged her £300 for them.

There are always horrible feckers who will swindle anyone that they can.

Going to Etsy to buy a watch is like coming to WUS to buy a crochet blanket throw.

Why?

For whatever reason, I have always assumed that the Etsy marketplace was trustworthy. But I’ve come across several of their vendors selling watches at incredibly discounted prices. I just thought Etsy had closer monitoring of its vendors for something like this to happen. I guess it’s no better than Ebay.

I do love the irony.

Lots of scammers on Etsy. Buyer beware.

Its original intention was for people at home to sell their crafts but it's become a haven for drop shippers and fakes. You can find good stuff there, though, like straps. Some sellers have genuine clasps and bracelets/links as well. Just be careful.

I actually just bought a branded Longines strap clasp from an Etsy seller, which seems genuine, but the split pin that attaches it to the strap was missing. the seller basically washed his hands and said I'd bought it as is and should have asked before purchasing. I reported it to Etsy as defective and got a full refund within minutes. So yeah, be careful, but I can't complain about Etsy's customer protection in that case.

I've reported these listing many, many times. Etsy does little to stop it.

So yes, watches on Etsy are usually fakes or scams. There are some authentic jewelers and vendors there, but you have to do your due diligence to separate the wheat from the chaff. Look at their history, and if they have a brick and mortar store. Those might actually be authentic listings. That being said, sometimes even honest dealers accidentally get duped too, but the honest ones will stand by their sales.
