Is Michel Herbelin a good brand?

Hi.
I came across these watches by a French company called Michel Herbelin (which I have never heard of tbh) and a watch collection of theirs called Michel Herbelin Odyssee. I have to say they look like AP Royal Oak a little bit. They're priced between 500 GBP to 775 GBP (630 USD to 970 USD) and idk if it's worth it. I really do like the shapes of the dial though. The basic models are pretty simple but higher end models are Automatic. I prefer a watch with exactly that kind of a dial shape and with screws on the dial. Suggestions?

In my early years on WUS, I picked up a auto Michel Herbelin, at that time in early 2012 it was mostly quartz offering. I remember at the time I thought the asking price was a bit much but I ended up buying on clearance from a French GM website so I didn't pay anywhere near the price you're talking for the auto version of their RO. Good overall finishing and attention to detail. If ÂŁ500 to ÂŁ775 is indeed the "street" price and not inflated MSRP, I'd be hard pressed to pay it. However, if you're dead set on the RO look, then who cares about the value prop.

This MH chronograph used to be on my want list.

Other than that, I know little about the brand.

Look good on pics but specs doesn't impress me. It's not that I dislike quartz, I love my quartz Tuna, Inox or G-Shock which priced around that MH. But they all have something else to offer. 7C46 in a Tuna is a jeweled and regulatable quartz and extremely accurate, both Inox and G-Shock are well known for their thoughness. I personally won't buy it even if I like the look. That's just too much money to be spent on such watch, at least for me.

Meh,

Too bad there is nothing in their lineup that catches my eye. That name is so close to mine it is probably some sort of derivative of the same name.

Hi omerraheel,

Michel Herbelin is a French brand (mid-level watches).

It's not-so-affordable (~1000/2000 € for the automatics), but the quality is really, really good. If you can see one in real life, you'll be impressed.

I want a Newport automatic for ages, only the price keeps me from getting one :-x

I've just ordered a Michel Herbelin for my singificant other. (I previously returned a Tissot intended for the same person that did not impress.) Since she's not into movements or wouldn't care specifically about watches being mechanically driven, I settled easily on a quartz. For myself, I fear, I would not. The prices (even in 2017) the OP mentions for a quartz, that seems too steep. It should easily be possible to offer an automatic movement from one of the various generic ETA derivative suppliers for the same money. Then, I'd find this an interesting option among the many Genta inspired watches about. I like how they have both an 8-sided and 10-sided bezel [EDIT: apologies, I did read this somewhere, but OP's examples are all 10-sided.] I find both Odyssee versions definitely attractive. I can't quite figure out what their dial finishes are. It just looks smooth, perhaps too smooth on the first, and it could be that that is where it lets the watch down a little. Arguably the last one just looks like it offers little more visual interest and thought-through finishes and details. This seems to have a dark-gray/black sunburst dial. I don't see many on the secondary market, but I'll be looking out for more info. By now, these models are no longer current, I presume?

In general, I must say Michel Herbelin produces many quite interesting designs that I think are noteworthy, especially in more creative case designs. For now I'm mainly hoping this is worth keeping as opposed to said Tissot... Who knows what my aim regarding this brand become...

So, I cleared up my own confusion. On a German forum there is indeed one with 8-sided bezel that looks remarkably like the second model posted by the OP. See here:
[Erledigt] - Michel Herbelin Odyssee 8 Ecken schwarzes Zifferblatt 12230/B14
It doesn't further specify the dial other than 'black'. I must say on these live pictures, it is a very deep black that does really suit the design, and I like the perhaps even stronger angularity of the 8 sides, too. But unfortunately, this one is/was not automatic. Definitely interested in seeing more examples and hearing more experiences with these watches. After all, these examples from this line are all seemingly post 2015, so surely some will have been sold and worn?

Yes. Unfortunately, they're a bit too pricey.

A good option is the second hand market.

I got mine for less than 120€ (including shipping)… it's probably a model from the late 90s' in excellent condition though.
