Aside from knowing it was counterfeit without looking at the photos, what boggles my mind is that posters clearly don't look at what they have. The see through back clearly says "stainless steel back" - would any watch manufacturer make such a mistake?

Fake and not even a good fake. A few minutes on eBay would have shown you the real one that they were attempting to copy - That LE should be in white gold, the word "Chronometer" is in the wrong place, the hour markers are a poor copy and the case back is all wrong.
