Is this watch repair kit worth buying??

9520 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  bdk4599
I am looking to find a watch kit with the basic tools... case opener, case wrench, pin pushers, plyers, some screw drivers etc..

This kit has every tool I need, and its only $1! Is this a good one, or are there any better ones out there? Thank you!

I bought a similar set from Hong Kong. I use the blue and grey plastic things, the hammer and the link pin punches to size all my bracelets, they work perfectly well. The pliers are useless and the spring bar tool bent on the first use though :-d. So yeah it's really only good value for basic bracelet adjusting. For a spring bar tool, get a Bergeon 6767-F and you're all set |>

Okay, great! Thanks for the info!
I have a similar kit but I got the 18 tool version that comes with a watch case vise and the three pin watch back tool.
These cheap kits are good buys for the most part. However the caseback openers are always awful and prone to creating scratches. So you will have to buy a good one (which will cost more than the whole kit did).

The next tools you will want to replace from the cheap kits are the screwdrivers and the tweezers... but there too the replacements will cost more than the original kit.

But these kits are good starts!
I wouldnt buy that kit.

Some of the parts will be junk and some will be good. Even with the bad parts its still a good value though.

I just went on ebay and bought everything i wanted individually. Just sort the list by "Lowest: Price + shipping" and you'll find all the parts you want pretty cheap.

I also STRONGLY recommend not using that case opener, i found 2 points of contact caused a lot of pressure on each point and actually made tiny indents on the case where the teeth grab and its also more slip prone. Go with a case opener that has 3 points of contact to disburse the pressure. (WATCH BACK CASE OPENER REMOVER REPAIR WRENCH TOOL KIT | eBay)

The drivers may be okay. Ive seen some that are crap and the driver's bit spins inside the drivers handle.

You may also want a watch case vise.

I bought the cheap kit already.. I would probably explode trying to use the case wrench if its as bad as it seems... I HATE when simple things become a task!

I don't like buying products from overseas usually because the shipping times... I'm definitely going to take the advice and get a better case wrench though

Edit: This one will do the job right? (http://www.ebay.com/itm/170507230125)

I figured you already bought it. Most of the items in that kit will work fine and are a good value for what you paid. I just was stating why I chose not to buy that kit. The case opener that came with the kit will work but it may mark up your case back.

That opener you posted will work nicely, its just like the one i bought.

I got mine (overseas) for 5$ + free shipping (eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices)

I don't mind buying from overseas because most of the stuff from the US originated there anyway. Also im from Canada and for some reason passing customs from the US can take weeks. If i buy over seas i usually get the item in 5-10 business days where as from the US it can take 6 weeks.

If it weren't for the long shipping i would much rather help stimulate the US economy with my $5

I have one of this as well and overall, I think it's decent value. I had a similar experience as mosfetaus.. The plastic bracelet pin removal works and so do the link pin punches and the hammer. The spring bar tool is poor quality though and would probably be ruined after a couple of uses. The small screwdrivers are also fragile and would warp if excess pressure is exerted. So far, I have been able to use the caseback remover as intended. Have to be careful with it though. I usually tape parts of the caseback when using the tool just in case the tool slips.

Since we are on this subject, does anyone know a good place to buy a better quality tool kit that is not overly expensive?
yea its $1 with $12.99 shipping.. which takes like 2 weeks from hong kong.

Order from amazon for less than 10, comes in 2-3 days

I noticed that immediately after I posted it.

I looked into amazon, it came out being a little over $10

I got this exact one on Ebay for $7 flat, and shipped from the US: 16-Piece Deluxe Watch Repair Tool Kit With Watchband Link Pin Remover, and More! | eBay
