Hi All,

Wondering if anyone could give me some useful advice regarding the two watches mentioned.

Looking at buying one of them but am unsure of which one to go for. The TAG, for me, looks a little bit more funky and i love the strap and deployment buckle. The details on the watch are very nice and with the PVD coating it should be pretty durable.

The IWC, although quite a large watch, seems very subtle. I also like the fact that people who no very little about watches tend not to know the IWC brand and that there watches are quite expensive. I want something that is well put together with a lot of heritage, yet something that people don't know is expensive. The patent release strap is a nice touch however it's a shame you can't really replace it with anything for this model.

The issue i have with the TAG is i just don't know if it's worth spending similar money for a brand which is in essence a step down from IWC. Would love to know what people's views are on this.

Do you think the Galapagos will hold it's value better?

Does anyone have any views on the two movements in these watches and how they compare? I read somewhere that the IWC has 25 jewels which seems very low for a brand like this with chronograph. Are there any reasons for this?

I'd choose the IWC and not look back.

Don't worry about buying a certain brand because it is seen as step below another. No sense in buying a watch from a more revered brand if you're not going to wear it.

Personally, I would buy the TAG - nice non-traditional layout for a chronograph. If you're determined to buy an IWC watch - buy another model in their lineup.

Based on looks I'd go with the Tag. I'd also get the Tag for the racing heritage as I'm a car enthusiast. The IWC has more prestige and is maybe built better. All in all I'd get the Tag even thouhh the IWC is a notch over it.

I must admit...i mistakenly ignored the racing heritage. I myself am a car enthusiast and i guess the TAG would make more sense.

You can pick the RS2s up now for around £3500. Does everyone think they are worth that?

IWC is going to be a better watch but I like the looks of the Tag a lot better so I'd go with that

Personally, the Tag just doesn't appeal to me, but what's important is which of the two really speaks to you.

Out of the current dive chronographs IWC offers, the Cousteau is really nice and another alternative to consider to the Galapagos:

If you are buying for me, I'd much prefer the IWC. It seems that you are leaning towards the Tag, if so enjoy and be sure to post some pics.

my experience

I had the Galapagos for about 10 months. I wore it hard for most of these months and when I did decide to trade it in towards my next watch, the Galapagos still looked brand new. It's a great watch, the rubber is super durable and unique. Kept time great and I thought the design was spot on? Why did I trade it - just had my eye on something else. You know how it goes..

I like the Tag, but the IWC is a great piece. It may or not be important to you, but I will say by far the Galapagos got the most attention from friends/family/strangers. FYI the one in your picture is shown with the textured strap on the outside, but the most recent one (like mine) had a smooth strap on the outside.

Oh and when I did trade it in, I got full value and then some (did not lose a dime even after 8 months of wear..). I was pretty joyed at that.

I really like both watches but would probably go with the IWC because of the name. I have always really like their watches.

How come you find it hideous and useless? Other than it's been PVD', it looks like a typical tachymetre bezel.

FYI the one in your picture is shown with the textured strap on the outside, but the most recent one (like mine) had a smooth strap on the outside.

The outer-textured strap was a prototype equipped when the new Aquatimers were first being shown to the public but IWC changed the design to the smooth strap and the textured style never made it into production. It would have been nice if they actually produced it to add another strap choice.

Not to hijack the OPs thread, but those who voted in favor of the Tag, what is your opinion on the steel version of the 17RS? Have the opportunity to pick one up (brand new, grey market) via a friend in the US for about USD 3400.
Do you reckon this is a good price and a good watch in general?

Still a tough decision. Head says IWC as it will probably retain it's value better if I did trade it in the future, however heart says the TAG for sheer visual appeal.

In matter of watches, you have to listen to your heart. The head will tell you to get $50 Timex

My heart, FWIW says IWC. Tag looks gimmicky. IWC looks like a legend. It probably is.

I find all "tachymetre" markings hideous! They are totally useless because I highly doubt anyone knows how to use the feature or ever does. They are an artifact of the 1950's and are as useless as a slide rule. They mess up every watch on which they appear. Otherwise, they're perfectly fine!

TAG Heuer - based purely on looks. TAG Heuer have a richer history to boot (ooh controversial!).
