Jaragar A034 (Navitimer Homage)

I wanted to share some first impressions of the Jaragar A034 Automatic - a fully automatic Breitling Navitimer homage which cost me a whopping 14 Euros (including shipping from China).

First off, this thing is huge. The diameter is a massive 50mm and the height is 16mm. This makes it even bigger than the Breitling that inspired its looks. The finishing quality is decent (especially considering the price). The quality of the case is the weakest part and the rotating slide-rule bezel makes some interesting sounds when you rotate it.

The dial is actually nicely detailed and of higher quality than you would expect from a dodgy Chinese brand. The glass is a domed mineral crystal and is really fragile (I know, because my first watch arrived with a shattered glass. This watch is the replacement that was quickly sent to me).

I'm not a big fan of the silver subdials, but I guess a bit of bling is to be expected from a Navitimer homage. There is no lume on this watch.

The case back has a window that shows the Tongji-based movement. It's not a pretty sight, but it works. I can't say much about the accuracy of the movement yet but I'm not expecting a lot.

The black faux-croc leather strap is surprisingly comfortable and doesn't even smell funny.

The subdials suggest a chronograph, but they're actually showing the day, date and the time in 24 hour format.

This is a *big* pilot watch. I'm not sure whether I'll be rocking this unit very often, but for 14 Euros it's fun to own.

Questions? Shoot! |>

I had one of those once. I ended up using it as a coaster ... :)

Grossly inaccurate. 1 sig fig or 2 sig fig if the answer is less than 2. The scales don't align with each other, not are they accurate along their own length.

Other notes:
It does have lume, it's just really hard to spot. It's only on the hands.
It has a unidirectional rotating bezel, but there's nothing on it.
The left subdial, day of week, has broken on mine. I think I hit the advance button somewhere near midnight by accident.

Additional (the edit):
The chronograph scale and the tachymetre scale are for a 30 second movement. The watch, of course, doesn't have one.

I have this one, which is pretty close :

The movement is adorned with some "perlage" (stamped probably)-it is the only one that has it, as I've seen so far :

The slide rule is decent and the watch itself keeps good time (have bought it in 2011). The only things that I don't like about it are the fact that the case is not stainless steel but alloy and that the strap is rubbish and too short (but still wear it as is).

It hasn't happened to me. This Jaragar seems to keep decent time and doesn't stop. The only nitpick I'd have is that the power reserve seems to be really short. It won't wind enough for a long night on its own, so it needs some handwinding to keep it going before bed (or in the morning).

Have no such problems (date number falling loose, short power reserve) with mine. I'm very happy with it. On the other hand, I had some very bad luck with another Chinese brand-Goer. I have two Goer watches, each with pretty severe problems. On one of them which I bought second hand in a market the power reserve is very short and it is very hard to get the crown out or turn it to set the time. Haven't worn it in a very long time. On the other one, which I also got (very lightly) used in a trade (I offered a cheap quartz watch for it) the power reserve is short plus two indices and a screw from the movement came loose and are floating in the watch mechanism. But, at least I have no trouble setting this one and it keeps reasonably good time.

This is the same trash they sell as fakes all over not-quite-first-world countries.

Same factory, they just put the fake brand and logo on it instead of 'Jaragar' or whatever else they thought up.

It's absolute horror. A horological nightmare.

Stuff of a WIS' campfire story while shining a flashlight in your face. :)

".. the wildly inaccurate slide rule caused the pilot to load the wrong amount of fuel.. then ... the lights went off and it was all dark.. it's only then he found out that..

..

..

THERE WAS NO LUME!!!"

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaahhhrg.. ;)

Thank you for voicing what I suspect many are thinking. F71 is a very friendly and a tolerant place, but sometimes people are too generous. Some "watches" are a poor value even at $15

Well.. That's one way of looking at it. For €14 I'm not expecting Breitling or even Orient quality. It's just silly swag fun to put on my wrist once or twice.

It's a working automatic. For €14. How can it be bad value when it costs the same as two coffees at Starbucks? No need to be a snob, I know it's not supposed to be a 'serious' watch... Geez.

Yeah, I wasn't actually all that serious in actively hating on it. ;)

Also let me clarify the point that watches with this movement/from this factory are sold as fakes: I mentioned that because I live in one of those not-quite-first-world countries and have checked these out when sellers come by in bars/tourist areas to hawk them out. So I have first-hand experience with them, but didn't want to blame whoever markets Jaragar because similar watches ending up with fake brand logos.

I just gone a Jaragar A034, and i'm as happy as can be. You can view the product in many different ways:

(1) OMG its a rather nice leather watchband that comes with a free watch! For $15, this is what I'd pay at most local stores for a genuine leather watchband!
(2) OMG its a slide rule for only $15! I haven't seen one of these for sale for 40 years and it comes with a free watch attached!
(3) OMG its an automatic watch for only $15! As my other watch is quartz I won't be wasting batteries!
(4) OMG it has a glass back and I can see the watch movement for only $15! Never did I have a watch before that allowed that!
(5) OMG it has a smooth sweep second hand! I haven't owned something like this in 4 decades!
(6) OMG I lost my $120 Timex T49866 Indiglo Intelligent Quartz after only 6 months so if this works for 1 month I'm ahead of the game (Timex Men's T49866 Intelligent Quartz Fly Back Chrono Compass Brown Leather Strap Watch).

With low expectations you can be extremely happy in life ... :) :)
