Brilliant, flip, thanks for posting. I'm getting a bit sick of the articles in Watchtime magazine about people I've never heard of and who only appear to buy watches as a pure status symbol. Mayer gives a perfect reason for collecting watches:
''On tour, I can't really carry around a lot of stuff,'' he explained, sitting in a New York recording studio. ''But you know what? I can pack a little roll of watches and wake up in the morning in Milwaukee and look at the watches and go, 'Who do I want to be today through this one piece?' It dictates a little bit of the mood.''
and
Mayer did, however, splurge on a Patek Philippe with a Sky Moon Tourbillon. ''There's no real retail for it, because it's so difficult to get,'' he said. ''You're not showing off your material wealth; you're showing off your knowledge.''

He's a long time WIS.

I remember seeing him on a lead in piece to a music award show right after the success of his first album. The show emcee had him and some rapper and he asked the rapper what he had bought with the success of his last album and he showed the obligatory diamond encrusted oversized bling watch. When the emcee asked Mayer what he had bought, he shows his watch and says a platinum IWC pilot chronograph, $24,000 or something like that. The rapper looks at Mayer and says, wow can I get a look at that.....

that guys got a proper collection! im lovin the Pam & APROO. ive seen the prices on the AP's rubber straps, and i wouldnt consider them "cheap" like he does, but i think everything is relative. he must be comparing it to the steel bracelet, and im comparing it to my house, which costs much less than an AP strap! :-d

That was a great article. Thanks for sharing! I play guitar, too, but I wasn't nearly as aware of the watches he was wearing-I was too busy looking at his fingers or the headstock.

Great article, thanks. Saw a tv music show a while back......John Mayer, Buddy Guy, B.B. King & Eric Clapton jamming...all wearing Rolexes.

Neat to read about a celeb that actually knows about/appreciates the watches he owns.
Ryan Seacrest is also a serious WIS.

I often wonder if any celeb WIS are on here. Alton Brown, Mayer, Seacrest? I know I'll never find out, but I just wonder.

I have his "Where The Light Is", and in one segment, inbetween sets, he switches outfits, and likewise, watches. You actually see all the watches he brought with him to the show, it must have been about 20.

He "blogs" about his watches frequently, usually Rolex, but he does have a sweet IWC Big Pilot. He's a self-proclaimed watch fanatic. And he's a great musician to boot. He's also known for giving Rolex's to his girlfriends, too.
