Hello everyone,

First post here on WUS.

Allow me to briefly tell you how I became interested in watches. My best friend is a watch aficionado, and he has showed parts of his watch collection. Frankly, I appreciated his love for watches but I never understood how fine watches were worth thousands of Dollars, when my Apple Watch was perfectly fulfilling my needs... until he showed me this video on Watchinder's Youtube Channel titled "How does an automatic Watch work", featuring a Patek Philippe 5180.

This was the moment when I first felt an emotional response to what I was seeing -- the impeccable craftsmanship, attention to detail, and above all the seamlessness that I cannot describe in words. I'm a musician, so the best way for me to compare it to is a Beethoven Symphony, where a sequence of individual tiny events make a fluid organic whole. And now I'm hooked... and I want to learn everything I can about this beautiful art.

I've been lurking on the forums a bit for the past couple of weeks and I enjoy the community spirit. Looking forward to getting to know some of you!

Welcome! This is a wonderful world, but tough on the wallet.
I suppose it is. However, before I became enlightened, I thought: "Who would spend $600 on a watch if you can buy one for $30-50?!", whereas now I think "If I spent $5000 on a watch with excellent pedigree, history, and timeless beauty, and not to speak of the daily enjoyment one can get from it, I will have acquired excellent value."

Welcome to WUS and nice intro. i may have to see what my friend thinks of that vid (ardent apple watch guy), and see if I can coax him over.

Anyway, I quoted your post, because unlike some of us who eventually have slid down that oh so slippery slope.. you're already there. ;P Though, I have to wonder if it's better to have slid slowly or to just wind up where you're at (with the potential to slide further). hmm

Maybe I wasn't clear. To some it may seem that $5000 is frivolous spending on something that can fulfill a function equally well at a $30 price point or even less. What I am saying is that a fine timepiece can offer more than just tell the time.

Like you, I was hooked once I paid attention to how a mechanical watch works. It takes a balance of left brain / right brain thinking to fully appreciate them.

Welcome aboard and enjoy your time here!
