Hello WUS'rs,

I've been going through the process of researching more about this 1985 Seiko 6309-7290 watch. It just doesn't speak to me and was considering selling it but decided to keep it as it is a common practice for a Tuna Mod. So in authenticity of the watch, researching countless forums and Youtube footage as well as the " What to look for in buying" write up, I'm coming across something a bit suspect with the dial. As I mentioned, I'm considering a Tuna mod and was debating keeping the dial but what I'm battling with is that the 6309-7 35MR seems suspect.

If you look closely, the Suwa dial isn't very articulated as it seems blotchy and the number 7 seems is seperated from the 35mr in comparison to other examples I've seen. This is where I'm calling for you experts or at least knowledgeable of this particular model. I bought this last year from a fellow WUS and this is what is in front of me: 1) No more lume on dial 2) Aftermarket bezel insert as the Pip protrudes 3) Hands have really bright lume and not sure if A.M. 4) Watch is keeping great time and havent opened case. Seller has mentioned that it has been under water and no problems 5) Case back is marked for 6309-729a which at it's original state was a Pepsi bezel insert.

Again, I wanted to get the WUS feedback because if the dial is Fugazi I'll replace it. If not, it'll stay and on with the mod. Here are some dials I'm still exploirng for the mod tuna project: sbbn017, 6309-7049 dial or a Militiary Spec. as well as hands options.

Thank you all and have a awesome 4th of July weekend,

Led Pencil

Looks like a John Dizon Philippine 6309 to me. Finding good unmolested 6309 is quite difficult!!

Yes. I've had this for about a year and hardly wear it. I wanted to sell it but figure it would be a great donor for a mod and especially now that it's all after market. Thanks for your reply.

I bought it from a fellow WUS and at a very low price. Considering what I bought it for, I was accepting of the parts not being all original. The watch keeps great time and so I can move forward with the mod without feeling guilty of replacing parts. Also, I've heard of some questionable watch dealers from my home land P.I. Loyswatch seems to be the more trustworthy out of all of them from what I gather. I guess from your observation, this Dizon watch made it's home with me!!! lols
I appreciate your reply.

I actually think his pieces are the best coming out of there. They always seem to run well!

It's weird because, I tried to connect with this piece as soon as it arrived. I kept on trying endlessly to convince myself of keeping it as it doesn't get the wrist time a watch deserves. I've learned so much from this acquisition as well as the players involved in the parts and mod world. I have to admit, resourcing the parts is a journey but the anticipation of rebuilt piece is exhilerating.

SMALL SIZE and in correct proportion with the text that is printed with it , is what u should look at ...

PHOTOS of Seiko 6309 (Slim Turtle) with LEGIT DIAL ...
pay attention to the TINY .... SUWA LOGO ... IT SHOULD NOT BE BIGGER IN PROPORTION THAN THE TEXT it is printed with ...
and of course some fakers have even went the extra mile in artificially aging some fake dials ...

I'm definitely not an expert but there are at least 2 "experts" that seem to disagree with your claim about the Suwa logo being too large, at least specific to the 6309-7290.

Hub City Vintage: 1987 Seiko 6309-7290 150m Automatic Diver “Slim Turtle”
Spencer Klein:

On both of these dials the Suwa logo is about 1.5x the size of the text. In the video Spencer says that the AM dials never get the linen like texture correct on the lume and the text should be crisp/clear under a macro lens. So might be worth looking at those details.

Edit: My reply was specific to your claim about the Suwa logo being too large. The OPs dial does appear to be a fake dial, but mms' I'm not so sure those are fake.
