As watches get smarter, and lives more complicated, there is a movement embracing the slow-living counter culture, going back to the simple things, celebrating tradition. So as the technology brands fight it out over who makes the smartest watch, British company Marloe is proudly going against the grain to create the most traditional of all watches - the hand-wound timepiece. Called The Cherwell, it's designed as a dress watch with a contemporary feel and the fledgling brand is now seeking funding on Kickstarter  so The Cherwell can be put into into production - and it's doing extremely well.

The Cherwell appears to have plenty going for it and the hand-wound mechanical timer has already raced past its initial £30,000 goal.

Named after the River Cherwell in Oxford, the Cherwell watch aims for the easy sophistication of the famed English university city, and Marloe says the result is a bespoke product developed from the ground up. The minimalist design is not simple though, featuring a bespoke 43.4mm stainless steel case and custom crown with M logo, double domed crystal glass, and a multi-layered dial.

The double layered dial has one layer for the minute batons and another higher layer for the hour batons, while at the 6’ o’clock position there is a sunken subdial.

The case-back has an exhibition window that shows off the oscillating balance wheel, internal engraving, and specifics of the hand-wound mechanical Sea-Gull ST3621 movement. The bezel on the case-back features a quote from one of Oxford University’s most famed professors, C.S. Lewis. Marloe is offering a decent amount of pre-purchase customization, with the Cherwell available in various dial color and strap variants, and even different finishes (polished case or bead blasted case). The project is still open on Kickstarter even though it has easily surpassed its initial goal and is now seeking further funding for its next stretch goal of £75,000.

Prices for the Cherwell currently start at £169 for those who pledge via the crowdfunding campaign, while its retail price when it launches later in 2016 will be £249/$359
