Mass Produced Watch Strap Quality Hierarchy

I've been in the watch strap rabbit hole and have been trying to get a better understanding of watch strap quality for those, like me, that are looking to get the most bang for their watch strap buying buck. While I don't have experience with all mass produced brands here is where I think it shakes out. I will list some of the brands that are missing.

I think it would be great if we can update and grow this list which should help folks with their search. Too keep this exercise simple, I'll just focus on leather straps.

Here is the list (1 being the best):
1. Delugs ¯\(ツ)
2. Colareb
3. Fluco
4. Barton (a bit stiff but I was impressed)
5. Hirsch
6. Hadley Roma
7. De Beers

Brands left off the list:
B&R
Crown and Buckle
Eulit
Rio1931
Artem
Hodikee
Teddy Baldassare

Of course there are many more that I missed. Feel free to add 'em.

Aww man, we didn't make the list! I guess we got to put in more work to get our brand and straps better known!

Handcrafted, handstitched, and the leather comes from world class tanneries all over the world. We have a ton of straps in stock (a wide variety of leather and range of sizes), and we can also make custom straps according to your heart's desire.

We try to do our best to educate people too!

And of course, we also have rubber straps and fabric straps available. But let's keep the discussion to leather straps :)

So sorry Bud! Hopefully someone here can add you to the list! I'm gonna check you out right now. I'm always in the market for another strap.

Great thread. Camille Fournet has been my goto in the past (I read they were the OEM strap maker for Zenith). I just checked their website and they seemed to have removed their higher end strap offerings so not sure if the quality is still the same now as it was a few years ago when I last used them.

One of my favorite watch straps ever was a Rios1931 teju lizard Avenue.
  • 3.5mm thick with flat padding.
  • more affordable than crocodile [unbelievable value]
  • top quality, very comfortable

Sadly, Rios1931 doesn't make it in a 22mm which is what I would want for my current daily watch.

I usually wear a Himalaya crocodile from Delugs these days.

I also have a bunch of ISOfranes for my dive watches.

No way Barton should be that high, or Fluco and Colareb that low. I'd put Colareb #2, Fluco #3, and Barton last.

Surprised to see no mention of Veblenist, good range and top quality stuff.
Yep, Delugs makes some awesome straps.
Recently tried straps from Hodinkee, crap quality leather and buckle, never buying again.
Torre (Italy) makes excellent quality vintage style straps.
Handd made (Vietnam) is my top choice for customisation and range of leather.

I was going to mention Veblinist as well. I just got my first few Delugs straps and am quite pleased. What about Archer and Ritchie towards the bottom of the list duking it out with Barton.

The thing is, it used to be Christopher Ward, who did great colours, black, dark blue, dark brown, and light brown/honey, in 18mm 20mm and 22mm. They now only do black in 20mm, but you might find other colours on eBay. If you want black 20mm, it's super quality. £135, less for the US as theres no vat, so about $135 from CW.

Fluco, Rios and others do nice straps, but often without QR pins, and without a deployant clasp.

I make leather watch straps in my spare time. These are a few in progress. Just a single piece that is either a single pass or double loop that fits on a No 9 sliding buckle. Examples are Horween Chromexcel. Set and forget fit and extra strap tucked under for a clean look. With a simple strap, leather care is easier for those looking for a reliable alternative than synthetic straps. Just joining the bandwagon.

A third or fourth for Veblenist. I’ve ordered many straps from Howard over the years, always great to deal with, always high quality. Recently purchased two straps for my GS Winter and couldn’t be happier.

Not sure why no one has mentioned Di-Modell from Germany. There are probably more watches out there on a “Chronissimo” than any other single strap. Di-Modell also makes straps for OEM German and Swiss watches too. They look great, are comfortable and last forever.

I've recently converted to a full time strap guy. I used to only wear bracelets but now it feels so heavy.

I've spent too much money on random straps. I think I could've bought a nice mid-tier watch with all the money I've spent in this rabbit hole lol.

My favorite brand is Artisan Straps. They are extremely high quality IMO. Also love RubberB for my Rolex sub.

Don't have to spend $80-$100 on a strap, I've also found good bargains with no name brands.

I also think Di-Modell belongs on the list. They and Hirsch are my favorites, partly because they make xl straps, but also because of the quality for an off the shelf product. There are others out there that i like and will customize length, but don’t think of them as off the shelf
